  2. 1 : km 1.17 - alt. 1,293 m - More BLM land - this time a good stretch of land with river access suitable for stealth or dispersed camping. River access.
  3. 2 : km 3.88 - alt. 1,288 m - Continue straight --- The road leading to the south and east takes you to the Fort Churchill campground. $15/n Campsites include a table and fire ring, and all are shaded by large cottonwood trees, running adjacent to the Carson River.
  4. 3 : km 5.51 - alt. 1,301 m - Fort Churchill State Park Visitors Center with Water, Restrooms 39.29568, -119.26627 Elev 4291 ft --- Fort Churchill was built in 1861 to provide protection for early settlers and guard Pony Express mail runs. Today the ruins are preserved in a state of arrested decay within the Fort Churchill State Historic Park, and visitors can walk designated trails to study the ruins. The park also features the renovated Buckland Station, an important way station in the 1800s for pioneer travelers on the Overland Route.

  8. 7 : km 26.76 - alt. 1,276 m - At the fork, keep right.
  9. 8 : km 26.81 - alt. 1,276 m - Bear left to stay on Simpson Rd
  10. 9 : km 26.95 - alt. 1,278 m - Hooten Well - Continue NNE and soon NE on Simpson Road/Pony Express Trail Hiker Tip: Successful water cache site B&C'12, Ken & Marcia '05 39.27670, -119.04445 Elev 4207 ft --- There is a well here, but it is operated by electricity. And there is no electricity. So unless someone happens by, don't count on it. Also there are cattle troughs. If it has rained recently, there may be water available. But cacheing is your best bet.
