Description

Start : Junction between Dinas Mawddwy public toilets (SY20 9JB) and opposite Gwesty'r Llew Coch or The Red Lion. Grid ref. SH 858 149

(S/E) From the toilets, follow the road (South) along the main village past Gwesty'r Llew Coch on your left hand.

(1) Take the short path up to the main road (A470), or follow the road to the junction.

(2) If you took the short path. When you get to the main road, walk around 250m left (South) and take the footpath marked into the woods shortly after the house on the hillside on your right (South-West). The path is well marked and easy to follow through the wooded section until you get to the disused quarries. From the quarries follow the markers for the paths (Cambrian way) carrying on up hill.

(3) From here the path markers for the Cambrian way seem to disappear, but it is open access land. Head North and up the hill rather than following the path down towards the forest. There is some sign of path. As you head up you should be able to see the small lake (Llyn Foeldinas) on the right.

(4) At the summit of the hill you will need to head slightly left (South-West) down the hill. At this point, the vegetation becomes more fern and a clearer path can be seen winding through it to a (broken) stile. Follow the path down by the side of the wood, heading towards the climb and the next ridge.

(5) As you are heading down the path, keep an eye out for the path on your right (sharp turn East-North-East around 900m from the summit. Grid ref. SH 837 137), it didn't appear marked and you can miss it.

If you go further there are markers for the path into the woods to the South and to carry on up the next ridge. Then you can see the path marked out. You can also follow the path down right from this point to modify the walk and walk around the base of the hill.

If you can find the path once it is out of the fern it appears to be fairly straight forward, following the gradient around the hill.

(6) Then the path heads back into a steep path down through the forest.

(7) The path returns to the main road (A470) a short way from Dinas Mawddwy (unless you missed the path and took the lower route round, which has a longer walk along the side of the road). Take the road right then left at the road junction down into Dinas Mawddwy village and you will be back at the toilets. (S/E)
