Description

Start : Port Tara Holiday home (BT57 8RX) Grid ref. NR 113 004 Junction B145 Ballaghmore Avenue.

(S/E) Starting from Port Tara Holiday Home head (North-West) toward the bay along Ballaghmore Road (B145).

(1) At the junction turn right (North-East), walk along the footpath observing the bay, any water sport activities and keep an eye out for the many keen swimmers in the bay! After passing the harbour round the corner, walk along the seafront footpath to the carpark at the end.

If visiting Portballintrae but not staying at Port Tara Holiday Home the carpark here is an ideal place to park.

(2) Cross the car park and head on down the Causeway Coastal Way. Cross the bridge at the salmon leap. Turn right (East) and walk along the board walk through the beautiful sand dunes. Continue along the path that runs parallel with the Causeway train and the beach.

(3) At the end of the beach path veer right (North-East) and follow the path up through the woods that brings you out at the Giant's Causeway train station and car park.

Follow the sign to "The Causeway", the path runs up the side of a field from the car park to the Causeway Hotel and Giant's Causeway visitor centre.

(4) Here you can choose to walk down to the Causeway ( note that you don't have to pay, you can walk past the visitor centre through the tunnel and you're free to walk down to the Causeway. ) visit the Causeway hotel for coffee or a meal, visit the Causeway visitors centre or start to walk back to Portballintrae.

To walk back you can backtrack the way you came or follow the road by the carpark until you come to a path on the right-hand side by a cottage on the corner.

(5) Follow the rough overgrown path (West) back down to the beach side path at waypoint (3) and then continue back along the path by the train track following it until you cross the railway bridge at the golf course.

(6) Check for golfers then cross the fairway and continue along the path parallel to the train track and golf course. This path takes you all the way to the mini train station in Bushmills. However, this walk leaves the path at the sign for the Bushfoot golf club.

(7) Turn right (North-West) and follow the gravel path to the golf clubhouse. If hot and tired why not pop into the club house and enjoy a pint or drink in the public bar, it has amazing views over the sand dunes, sea and gold course.

Then follow the road back down to Ballaghmore road and right to Port Tara Holiday Home across the road. (S/E)
