Description

(S) Start at the Cross Keys pub in Ombersley. From the car park turn left onto the main road (A4133). After a few yards take the first left turn down Chapel Lane. After a short distance, take the first track on the right. This track will lead to a new residential road called “Headlands” but there is no indication that this is the name.

After a few paces along this road, there is a signposted footpath on the left. Take this footpath which leads through some allotments and out the other side continuing along the footpath until a gap in the hedge on the left onto a track/road.

(1) Turn right and go along the track until a white cottage on the right where the track meets a road at the start of Uphampton village. Turn left and follow this road to a “T” junction. Turn left here and then almost immediately take the footpath to the right.
This is also the entrance to a residential property, but if the gate is closed there is now a style to the right of the gate. Keeping right, there is another style after a few yards. Over this style then continue straight on to a third style which leads into a coppice. Go through the coppice and onto another style.

Here the path leads across the Private grounds of Pipe-style house. Keep straight ahead. It is a public right of way, but care should be taken to be as unobtrusive as possible. The path leads across a lawn over a driveway across another lawn to a distinctive arch in the hedge. This can be seen from the style. Total distance from style to Arch about 50 to 70 yards/meters.

Go through the arch and turn left. Keeping the hedge on the left continue for a short distance to a building housing a swimming pool. There are two large cylinders to the right of the building. Turn right here and after a few yards, the path leads to a corner of a field.
Do not turn left but carry straight on as the footpath continues along the edge of the field.

(2) Continue along this footpath for between two and three hundred meters/yards where there is a gate and sign on the left into Millhampton wood.
Follow the pathway through the wood to the far edge (about 400m). Then take the footpath to the right.
At a “T” junction of footpaths turn left. The path now follows a trail across a field marked by the farm owner. Over a style into another field and again straight across this field to another style. Go over the style. Here there is a fork in the trail. Both paths lead to the same point but for ease of exit follow the left-hand path along the edge of the hedge/field. Where the two paths rejoin at the corner of the field there is what looks like a dead end on the left. Go down this dead end as at the end of it there is a gap onto the roadway.

(3) On the road turn left. Travel down the road for a short distance until a road is joined from the right at a fairly sharp bend.
Turn right down this road then take the track immediately on the left along the side of a white house (Barn conversion).
Follow the track around the house then keeping right through the trees and not going into the field on the left. This track leads down to the river where you meet the Severn way.

(4) Turn left at the river and follow the Severn way keeping the river on the right through several gates, passing the Lenchford hotel and Lenchford Meadow Static home park across the river. After a gate, the path joins a road that goes past a weir. Continue along this roadway until the approach to the bridge at Holt fleet (A4133).

(5) Just after the road leaves the river bank by a few yards, there is a small gate on the right-hand side that leads back to the river bank. This is about 30 yards before Holt fleet bridge. Go through the gate and again follow the river bank.

Here there is an archway that leads under the main road. Go through this archway and continue along the river bank keeping the fishing lake on the left and the river bank on the right. Keep going along the Severn way passing the Wharf hotel on the left keeping the river bank on the right. A short distance passed the Wharf there is a style into a field. Cross the style and go through the field again keeping the river on the right.
Over anther style into a second field and continue along the River bank.

(6) There is a distinctive tree in the middle of this field. On reaching the next style at the corner of the field. Don’t go ever it but turn left and follow the hedge to the far corner of the field where there is a kissing gate.

Go through the gate and follow the path through the woods until it joins another path “T” junction. Turn Right and follow the path to Black pond Fish pool.

(7) Keeping the pool on the right continue along the footpath until it joins a field. Keep going keeping the woodland on the right. In the corner of the field there is a gate. Go through the gate and continue straight on along the path until it reaches the main road (A4133) through Ombersley.

(8) At the road, turn left and follow the road straight ahead, at the roundabout go straight back to the Cross Keys for a welcome drink. (E)
