Glenfinnan Viaduc

Description

Start : National Trust of Scotland Glenfinnan Monument Visitor centre. PH37 4LT

(S/E) With your back from the visitor center, go straight across the car park. When you have the cafe on your right hand, turn left towards a bigger car park. When you get to this second car park, keep right to reach the "Footpath to viaduct" arch/signpost. You now walk straight on a wide path "Glenfinnan Viaduct Trail".

Cross the River Finnan using the wooden bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn right with the river on your right-hand side. Follow the riverside following the main track as it curves left.

(1) When your reach a junction with a road, you can take a detour here following the road right, then turn right again when you see a bridge. It will give you a perspective from under the bridge.

Otherwise, carry straight on. At the y junction keep right and keep straight up the hill on the main path under the bridge. Go through the wooden gate straight up the hill. Carry on up the steps on the main path to reach the main viewpoint. (A) Walk up in the same direction, the path will flatten then will go up and down a few times. On the way, you will encounter boardwalks, then a single track and steps again with some views on the Loch on your left hand. This single track takes quite a while before reaching a wooden gate and a tunnel under the railway.

(2) After the tunnel, cross the miniature railway to walk on boardwalks and steps to cross the miniature railway again towards Glenfinnan Station Museum and the Dinning Car. Go left past the train station on your right-hand side going down the road.

At the junction with A830, cross the busy road with care before turning right along the pavement with a red telephone box on your right. At the next junction, turn sharp left down the hill between houses. Keep walking on that lane until you reach a road junction with Glenfinnan Pier Road where you turn right. Follow this road as it curves right up to its end. Just before reaching the jetty, turn straight on your left hand towards the boat embankment.

(3) From there, turn left on the footpath on the left side of the Loch Shield. When you reach a sign with " Loch Shiel cruises" go up the Hotel past its entrance to reach Glenfinnan Pier Road. At the road, turn right and walk along it until your meet A830 main road again. On the way, you will pass Saint Mary & St Finnan church up the hill.

On the main road keep right across the bridge using the safe pavement. You will see the car park where you parked on your left. You can finish your walk now or make another detour by going straight up opposite the Visitor centre.

(4) When you are opposite the centre, turn right along the paved path towards the tower "Finnan Monument". On the way ignore the boardwalk on your left and keep straight towards the lock and tower. Go around the Monument (B), enjoy the view of the Lock then walk back to the visitor centre entrance and then your car. (S/E)
