Description of the walk

The walk begins at Walton Sports & Social Club.

(S/E) Walk out of the car park and turn left and then immediately turn left again onto a gentle downhill path. At the bottom of the hill take the left hand path and walk along the field side path past the sports field. Pass through the hedge and onto a dirt road which services nearby allotments. Continue forward over a small stone bridge and on to School Lane beside the Manor House.

(1) Walk forward and walk under the two railway bridges and turn right onto Oakenshaw Lane. Walk on the roadside pavement passing under another railway bridge. Walk past Odd Things Shop & Caff on the right hand side (open Easter to September – call in for a coffee and a look round).

(2) Turn right into Chevet Terrace, pass under another railway bridge and down a long tarmac road past Woodyard Cottages Pass through the metal gates into Walton Colliery Nature Park. At the first junction of the broad paths, near the Barnsley Canal, bear right and walk between the two lakes and past the green milepost No 67 on the National Cycle Network on the Trans-Pennine Trail.

(3) On reaching the car park walk onto Shay Lane, turn right and walk on the roadside pavement back to the starting point.(S/E)

Rather a lot of road walking involved. The Nature Reserve is very pleasant and you could enjoy more of it by parking in Chevet Terrace or Shay Lane car parks. The walk suggests parking in the Sports and Social Club Car Park but this is for members only. However, an excellent introduction to Walton Village.
