Description of the route

Park at the Plage de la Madrague car park, on Avenue de la Madrague.

(DA) Head towards the EV1 V81 cycle path via Avenue des Terrasses, turning left at the end of Avenue de la Madrague. Follow the cycle path, keeping left and going straight on until you reach a roundabout

(1) Go round the roundabout on the right and follow Avenue de L’Adour.

(2) Carefully cross back to the left using the pedestrian crossings just before the second roundabout.

(3) As the avenue curves out, head left towards the restaurant car park and follow the River Adour alongside the harbour.

(4) Just before the end of the harbour, turn right and follow the cycle path on the left-hand side of Avenue de l’Adour. You’ll come to a roundabout with a slender sculpture.

(5) Keep to the left at the roundabouts, staying as close to the river as possible.

(6) In Bayonne, go under the Henri Grenet Bridge, then cycle alongside a car park on your right.

(7) At the end of the car park, turn right and pass between the buildings, go through a gate and then pass in front of the sub-prefecture. Continue along the cycle path beside the river until you reach the Pont Mayou, which spans the River Nive.

(8) Leave the EV1 and V81 by crossing over to the pedestrian crossing to join Quai Amiral Dubourdieu. Please note: this section is on a shared path until you reach the Pont du Génie.

(9) Carry on straight ahead and follow the Vallée Verte along the River Nive for 10 km. You’ll come to a small side road just after a car park on your right.

(10) Turn left, cross the small bridge and immediately turn right onto the cycle path, which runs as close as possible to the River Nive to avoid the departmental road. You’ll reach Ustaritz; carry on straight ahead to the end of the cycle path until you reach a roundabout.

(11) After taking the time to visit Ustaritz, a pretty little Basque village, set off again, following the route in reverse to La Madrague Beach (S/E).

Notes

Almost the entire route runs alongside the Adour and Nive rivers and on a dedicated cycle path, except between the Pont Mayou and the Pont du Génis, where you’ll be sharing the road with traffic for about 500 metres.

Worth a visit

During the ride, you can go for a swim at La Madrague Beach either on the way there or on the way back. You’ll be able to explore part of Bayonne and its Gothic cathedral. You’ll pass by the large dry dock housing the Hermione in Anglet, which is well worth a quick visit.

Magrague Beach is in Anglet, not Biarritz.
Thank you.
