Upper Elan valley from Craig Goch Reservoir dam

Target Postcode: LD6 5HP (Elan Valley Visitor Centre), the North end of the Elan Valley reservoir chain, often called the "top dam". Cross over the dam to park.

(S/E) From the car park, go North then North East, climbing up with Craig Goch reservoir below you. Descend slightly to cross a stream.

(1) Continue climbing. Near the top, bear East to reach Roman Camp.

(2) Descend to the road about 4.2 kilometres from the start. Turn right and follow the road for about 500 metres.

(3) Turn right off the road and cross the stream. Climb steeply South to reach the highest point in about 1.8 kilometres.

(4) Descend South West for about 2.2 kilometres.

(5) Turn left at the track and Eastwards, then South for about 1 kilometre to reach the road.

(6) At the road, take a sharp right turn going North West. After about 250 metres, go West on what was the construction railway past the Penygarreg Dam.

(7) Follow the pathway going West, then Northwest to reach the original Dam and car park in about 3 kilometres.(S/E)

There are toilets at the starting car park.

Boots are recommended.

We saw many Skylarks during the walk.
