Tirohanga Track, Queen Charlotte Sounds viewpoint, Picton

The Tirohanga Trac (or Hilltop View), brings you through native fern trees full of wildlife. This was is quite short but steep enough to give you a good sweat. The view at the top is totally worth the effort as you get a welcoming bench from where you can enjoy a view of Picton and Waikawa and the ferry coming and going along the Queen Charlotte Sounds.

Description of the walk

Start : Main car park at Picton Marina

(S/E) With the footbridge over the marina on your left-hand side and Beachcomber hotel on your right, walk towards the Eastern end of the car park.

(1) At the end of the paved footpath, turn right (South) along the housings and up the hill to reach Waikawa Road.

(2) When you reach the road, turn left (North-East). Walk straight along for around 260 m to take a right turn (South-East) at the second road junction along Newgate Street. Walk South-South-East along the road, for 160 m or so, to find the trailhead and steps going uphill on your right-hand side. (You will find signposts)

(3) Turn right and here you start your walk along the steep path up the hill. The path is straightforward for 2 Km until you reach the top. On the way, you will find a series of switchbacks, always keep straight on the most obvious path.

(4) After enjoying the view, return via the same way back to the car. (S/E)
