Description of the walk

Start: The King Charles' Head, Goring Heath (RG8 7RL) Grid ref. SU 664 788

(S/E) Turn right from the 'pub', and in about 200yds sharply right into a wood. The footpath descends slightly then rises to meet a metalled lane in 800yds.

(1) Cross this and take the footpath on the other side, and go right again in 200yds. This footpath continues through woods, then comes out in fields and rises to meet a road.

(2) Cross this and take the track on the other side, leaving this by a stile on the right after 400yds. The footpath then descends steeply into a dry valley.

(3) Turn right following the valley bottom into a wood.

(4) 500yds further on, take a sharp turn back to the left and traverse uphill, eventually coming out into the open with a view of the River Thames. The footpath now descends steeply to a crossing track.

(5) Turn right.

(6) In 700yds, by Hardwick House, take the track to the right and follow this uphill to another right turn, the track from which descends to the dry valley then rises up the other side.

(7) Take the right fork at a Y-junction, go over a crossing track to find a footpath that goes straight on by the side of a wood to the 'pub'.(S/E)

Practical information

Start: The King Charles' Head, Goring Heath (RG8 7RL) Grid ref. SU 664 788

Parking: The King Charles' Head pub is now CLOSED, having been converted to a private residence. However it is a nice walk, and you may be able to park nearby, and go to one of the pubs in Pangbourne or Goring afterwards.

Driving to start: (Goring Heath is some way from Goring).
About seventeen miles from Newbury along the A4 then the A340 to Pangbourne. Go over the (20p) toll bridge to Whitchurch, and up the hill. Fork right at the top and turn right at a T-junction. The 'pub' is just over a mile down this road, over one crossroads.
