Description of the walk

Start : Ardminnan Road (nearby postcode BT22 1QJ)

(S/E) From Ardminnan Road, begin at the signposted entrance crossing the stone stile into the field. Follow the fenced-off trail through the field to reach another stone stile and the entrance into the graveyard. Here you will find an interpretation panel with information on the historic site and its fascinating history.

(1) Make your own way through the graveyard taking in the panoramic countryside views and historic graveyard. Return via the same route to Ardminnan Road. (S/E)

Start : Ardminnan Road (nearby postcode BT22 1QJ)

Parking : The trail begins from the Ardminnan Road approximately one mile from the village of Cloughey. There is no car parking available at the start of the route therefore if you are travelling by car it is suggested you park in Cloughey Village and walk approx one mile along Ardminnan Road to the route entrance.

Facilities : There are no facilities at the walk itself, the nearest shop can be found in Cloughey approximately one mile from the start of the walk

Worth a visit

(A) Slans Graveyard : A scheduled monument dating back to the first millennium AD, at one time Slans was the main graveyard for the Cloughey and Kirkistown area and the burial place for many sailors who lost their lives in the waters around the notorious North and South Rocks off Cloughey.

Welcome to the Red Trail on the Mount Stewart estate. Mount Stewart gardens were acquired by National Trust in 1957, with the house following in 1977. The wider estate was acquired in 2014, bringing the total area to just under 1000 acres. The first areas that have been opened to visitors incorporate the Red, Blue, and Yellow Trails. The Red trail is the main circular walk, and loops through a mixture of woodland and farmland. There are a number of points of interest along the walk, including working farmland, the ruins of a folly, and water features. Red squirrels may be seen in the trees, or running along the ground to get into a tree. The best times to walk the Red Trail are early in the morning or late afternoon, especially in Autumn.
