Seven Sisters (East bank of the Cuckmere River)

The Seven Sisters are magnificent white cliffs cut in half by the River Cuckmere, which ends its course towards the sea. Part of the Southdowns National Park, the site is protected. It is one of the most beautiful natural sites in South-East England. We walk among the sheep (many gates to pass) toward the cliffs to walk back along the meandering river.

Description of the walk

Start: Seven Sisters Country Park - Visitor Centre, Exceat (BN25 4AD) Grid ref. TV 519 995

(S/E) From the Visitor Center, follow the path which allows to carefully cross the busy road after the bend. Head for the Seven Sisters Park entrance gates.

(1) Quickly leave the main track for the grassy path which climbs to the left. Pass another sheep fence. The path initially follows the road. Then, at the fork, take the right-hand path (yellow waymarker), continue straight on uphill and "admire the view of the meandering river on the right". Continue to the highest point.

(2) Pass another gate and carry on following the yellow signposts on the wayposts. The path descends towards the river mouth in the distance (beach).

(3) Find the wider path at the gate. Follow it for 100 m, then turn left at a fork, onto the path leading up (Southdown Way). This becomes grassy and begins to climb to the top of the cliff.

(4) At the path junction (signposted), follow the path to the right, downhill towards the beach and estuary. The path descends more steeply to join the main path at the pebble beach. Follow a wide track below behind the pebble hill (on the landward side). Continue as far as the mouth of the Cuckmere River, where it flows into the English Channel.

(5) Head due North along the large chalk track, keeping to it until you reach the road (take care when crossing).
The Visitor Center is opposite (S/E).
