Pontarlier – Vuillecin – Sombacour – Chaffois

Here is a hybrid bike route that will take you on a pleasant circular route through the woods between Vuillecin, Sombacour and Chaffois. Very little traffic (except perhaps on the first and last kilometres).
It’s easy to ride and suitable for everyone.
Note: this route was completed on an e-bike! Comments on difficulty and time are based on this mode of transport.

Description of the route

Start from the Decathlon car park next to Hyper U.
(S/E) Leave the car park towards Hyper U and take the cycle path on your right. At the first roundabout, turn right towards the ring road, staying on the cycle path. At the ring road roundabout, turn right then immediately cross the Route de Doubs (Grande Rue) to the left to reach the small underpass.

(1) Use this underpass to go under the RN 57 and then join the Route de Vuillecin. Turn right to reach the village.

(2) At the junction at the entrance to the village of Vuillecin, turn left onto Rue de Pontarlier, which takes you over a bridge spanning the Drugeon, and carry on straight ahead.

(3) When you reach the foot of the church, turn right onto Rue Principale and leave the village by following this road.

(4) When you reach the three-way junction where there is a small car park, take the road leading uphill to the left.

(5) From here, 50 metres to the right, you can reach a viewpoint overlooking the Pontarlier plain, the reservoirs and the Larmont mountains. Return to the road and follow it straight on until you reach the edge of the woodland.

(6) Continue straight on along this road through the meadows. Stay on this road until you reach the junction with the D48.

(7) At the crossroads, take the road on the left and keep to the edge of the forest.

(8) You can stop here to enjoy the view of the Monts du Larmont and the Alps (in the distance, weather permitting).

(9) At the junction just past the shelter (set back on the right), carry on straight ahead along the road that leads downhill.

(10) At the junction with the Route de Pissenavache (I’m not joking – that’s the name on the sign), carry straight on down towards Bians-les-Usiers.

(11) At the junction in the village, turn left towards Sombacour.

(12) At the Stop sign at the Sombacour crossroads, turn left towards Pontarlier and follow this direction.

(13) After leaving Sombacour, take the first small road leading uphill on the right (there’s a cross at the junction).

(14) At the next crossroads, turn left. Stay on the main road.

(15) Pass a cross and carry on straight ahead until you reach the entrance to Chaffois.

(16) Head down to the bottom of the village.

(17) Head towards the school and the village hall, then cross the small bridge.

(18) Go under the D72 and join a farm track on the left which runs partly alongside the D72.

(19) Keep to the left, staying on this track.

(20) At the junction with the D72, cross straight ahead towards Dommartin.

(21) In the centre of Dommartin, turn right to cross the bridge over the Drugeon. Just after the bridge, turn left onto a new farm track which runs alongside the Drugeon and leads to the entrance to Vuillecin.

(22) At the junction with the cross-town road, turn right to return via the same route as at the start. Before the roundabout with the N57, take the left-hand lane into the underpass.

(1) Return to the starting point via the cycle path (S/E).

A lovely e-bike ride. A pleasant picnic break by the roadside on the botanical trail on the way up.
