Nanos Plateau (long route)

An accessible hike but one that requires a bit of stamina on the ascent. Shaded in the first section. Beautiful views of the Slovenian forest with the sea in the background. Close to the tourist sites of Predjama and Postojna.

Description of the walk

Start from the village of Razdrto. A free car park is provided specifically for hikers wishing to visit the Nanos plateau.

The walk is well signposted with red and white markers

(S/E) Head north and cross the bridge over the motorway to reach the ‘official’ starting point of the hike. Then turn left and walk for 100 m, passing the signposts.

(1) Turn right and follow the path to a Y-junction.

(2) At the junction, follow the signs for Vojkova koča (Vojkova mountain hut).
You can choose to take:
- either the long route, turning left, due west, as we did (polozna pot),
- or the short route by turning right (Strma pot). Then ignore the side paths. Further on, you’ll emerge from the forest and enjoy a beautiful view of the Slovenian mountains with the Adriatic Sea in the background, before reaching another fork (alt. 1040 m).

(3) Follow the path to the right, heading south-east. Then continue straight on, ignoring the side paths. You will reach the Vojkova Mountain Hut.

(4) You can enjoy a beer or a snack. There are picnic tables in the shade and in the sun, depending on your preference.
Retrace your steps along the outward route to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Free parking at the start

(4) Mountain hut at the summit serving cold beers and local specialities.

(2) The short route takes an hour less but is steeper. It allows you to complete a circular route by returning via the long route.

One slight downside: you can hear the motorway in the background.

Important information: the long route does not include any technical sections, even though it climbs steeply. As indicated, it is possible to take the short route (basically a straight line between the start and the summit), which has a few technical sections with metal ramps and rocky climbs, but these are not particularly difficult for people in good physical condition and do not include any steep drops or vertiginous sections. It can be quite windy as you approach the summit. If you want to do a loop, it is best to go up via the short route (to climb facing the rocks) and come back down via the long route, which is very easy to descend.

A lovely walk with stunning views once you reach the plateau; it’s impossible to get lost. There are a few tricky sections over the rocks, but these are manageable for anyone who’s a confident walker. Free parking is available. There’s an alternative route at the summit, as well as a café and picnic tables.

A magnificent hike with a 360° view at the top.
The climb is challenging, with sections similar to a via ferrata, but can be managed without equipment.
