Description of the route

“Aire de Loisirs” car park, Impasse du Lizain.

(S/E) Leave Impasse du Lizain and take the first street on the left, Rue d’Echavanne.

(1) At the junction with Rue des Ouches, continue left onto Rue de Frahier. You will cross a bridge over a branch of the Savoyard river which used to supply an old mill on your right.

(2) At the junction with the D16, which joins the N19 to the right at “Les Barres”, turn left onto the Grande Rue towards the centre of the village of Échavanne. In the centre of the village, pass the town hall, the village hall and one of its fountains.

(3) Leave the Grande Rue (D16) by turning right onto Rue de Chenebier. Follow this road straight on along the edge of a wood until you reach Chenebier. Pass the cemetery on your right and continue down the street.

(4) At the wayside shrine near the cemetery, continue down Rue d’Échavanne on the left. Pass the church on your left.

(5) At the bottom of the street, after crossing a stream, take the street on the left, Rue du Chemin Neuf, passing the Town Hall and the school to reach the Grande Rue. On your left, up on the hill, you will see the Temple.
Turn left onto Grande Rue.

(6) Walk past the fire station on your right, take the first street on the left and follow the Grande Rue. As you leave the village, at the traffic lights, continue straight ahead onto the Route de Chatebier.

Pass the Moulin Gheerbrant and continue straight on along Rue de Chenebier.

(7) At the next fork, go straight on (some might say left) to cross the Bois des Soyeux via the road “Crotemalbert derrière Bois” then “La Grande Noye” to the next junction.

(8) At the junction of La Grande Noye, Rue de Chenebier and Rue des Soyeux, continue straight on towards Châlonvillars along the road that winds between the ponds and through the woods. Head down the street towards the centre of Châlonvillars.

(9) At the bottom of the street, at the small roundabout with a wash house on the right and a car park opposite (sign with map in the car park), turn left onto Rue Principale (D218) until you reach the junction with the D19 at the bottom of the Châlonvillars hill. A gourmet restaurant is located at the junction on your left. Caution! Traffic lights are currently being installed at the junction.

(10) Cross the R19 carefully and follow the road opposite. Cross the Douce river and then the old canal, then immediately turn left onto Rue du Salbert; the canal and its old lock are on your left.

(11) Leave Rue du Salbert and the canal on the right, pass under a high-voltage power line and head up the street towards La Forêt (the name of the village) via Rue de Châlonvillars (D8). It’s a bit of a climb!

(12) At the top of the hill, leave the D8 on your right (which leads to Salbert) and take the road on the left towards Évette-Salbert via Canton Grosjean (Rue de la Forêt).
(13) At the end of Rue de la Forêt, turn left towards Frahier (note: on the right, there is an information sign at the entrance to Rue du Thiamont).

(14) Continue left to return towards Frahier and Chatebier via Les Gouttes du Temps; leave the path signposted “Grand-Vie” (Red Circle) on your right. Take care on the descent and in the bends. Pass under the old canal and enter Frahier via Rue d’Evette. You will see the church bell tower and a restored wash house on your left.

(15) In the village square, there is a beautiful circular wash house fountain. Cross the R19 with care and head to the car park at the leisure centre on the left (S/E).

Worth a visit

There are numerous wash houses in the villages along the route; these are marked on the map.
The old canal, which forms part of the Canal de l’Est, was intended to link the Rhône-Rhine Canal to the Saône in the aftermath of the 1870 war. The Champagney basin served as a reservoir for this canal, and a port was built at Frahier to supply the construction site. Construction of the canal ceased in 1909 after 28.6 km of the planned 85 km had been completed.
