Palmeraie and kasbah of Amezrou

On this easy walk, you can enjoy the coolness of the palm grove and visit a Kasbah that is still inhabited, two must-see attractions for anyone travelling to Morocco.

Description of the walk

The starting point is the "Oasis Palmier" campsite, but you can park nearby and start the hike from where you are.

(S/E) Head south-southeast for about 600 m until you reach the Dromadaire roundabout. Turn right towards Zagora, then immediately cross the road before taking the left-hand path (which is in the shade in the morning) along the canal. Continue for about 400 m.

(1) Cross the canal bed, go straight ahead to continue south for about 450 m until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn right, then left after a few dozen metres to join the road, then left again and continue straight ahead.

(3) Leave the return path on your left and continue straight ahead until the next intersection.

(4) Turn right, then left, following the orange arrow, and continue to the riad.

(5) Turn right and continue for about 400 metres.

(6) Turn left and continue for about 700 m, following the orange arrow.

(7) Make a short right-left turn and keep heading south-east.

(8) Turn left at a 90° angle (orange arrow), then take a right turn followed by a left turn.

(9) Turn right (orange arrow) and continue until you reach a T-junction.

(10) Turn left (orange arrow) and drive to the edge of the palm grove.

(11) Take the road on the left and continue straight ahead until you pass the riad you passed on the way there.

(5) Go straight ahead.

(4) Turn right, then continue until you reach the main street of the village, which is just over 300 m away. Turn left.

(12) Turn right, then right again.

(13) Enter the heart of the kasbah, turning left to wander through the maze of streets, then exit a little further on, going around it and leaving it on your left.

(14) Turn left again to re-enter the heart of the kasbah and explore at your leisure: the route shown is for guidance only.

(12) Turn right and continue to the nearby crossroads.

(15) Turn left and return to the palm grove.

(3) Turn right to rejoin the path you took on the way there and follow the same route in reverse to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Although mainly in the shade, this walk requires (especially if it is hot) that you bring water with you.

This has nothing to do with hiking but can be very useful in case of vehicle breakdown in this region: garages that will help you out immediately without an appointment... and at Moroccan rates: ask at the campsite indicated at the start, or where you are staying, or ask at any shop in Zagora.

Worth a visit

  • 4x4 or camel rides in the desert.
  • Visits to museums and ancient adobe villages.
  • Another hike, the nearby Djebel Zagora, offers a beautiful view of the Drâa Valley and the city of Zagora.

I would add that in the palm grove, you just need to follow the pink markings, dots or arrows when it is permitted, but not the crosses when it is prohibited.
