Lethilaki and Raakonvaara circular loop, returning along Miekojärvi

An easy walk along forest tracks, with short climbs to viewpoints, lakeside paths and beaches. There are a few marshy sections, as is common in many parts of Finland: make sure you wear suitable footwear. You’ll need to take tracks in good condition to reach the start of the walk. You may come across reindeer along the way.

Description of the walk

Park at the wide junction between the road and the track leading to the lake.

(S/E) Please note: the start is poorly marked for the first 50 metres. Cross the road and the ditch at the old sign opposite the road and the post with white markings. As soon as you enter the forest, the path becomes more visible again and is marked very regularly with white markings.

(1) Carry on straight ahead. The path opens out into a stony section and climbs towards the first summit.

(2) Descend on the other side and continue along the path marked in white. Views of the lake in the distance.

(3) You’ll reach a wide, sandy path; follow it to the right, heading due south. There are a few quite spongy patches.

(4) At the large crossroads, turn right and rejoin the regular white markings.

(5) Cross a track and continue straight ahead along a wide path. At a large sandy clearing, veer slightly to the left to rejoin the path marked in white, which climbs up through the rocks. Navigate a series of short ascents and descents. You’ll reach a summit with a bench and a view of the lake in the distance.

(6) Head back down towards the west, towards the lake which is clearly visible, following the white-marked path.

(7) At the junction, continue straight ahead then turn left, still on the white-marked path. After a very spongy section, you’ll reach a beach on the shores of Lake Miekojärvi (a lovely spot with a kota – a Finnish hut – and facilities for making a fire).

(8) Continue straight on at the end of the beach along the white trail. Then turn right and cross a wooded area before reaching the lakeshore. Walk along the lake to a beach forming a sandy headland (picnic table, benches and a kota near the headland).

(9) Set off again towards the north-east and follow the lake along a path that climbs slightly (you’ll rejoin the white markings). There are plenty of boardwalks and bridges across the marshes, which are very welcome. You’ll come to a junction with the track.

(10) Follow the track to the left, go straight on at the various junctions and you will return to the car park (S/E).
