Le Mouscaillou via the Col des Treize Vents

This hike above Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare will take you up to higher ground in the first half, where you can admire a magnificent panorama. From the Pétète d'en Cabausse, above the Col des Treize Vents, or from the Mouscaillou, you can enjoy a 360° view: the Vissou, the Languedoc plain and the Mediterranean to the south; Serre de More, the Orques cliffs and Marcou to the north. Then it's time to descend through a chestnut grove where, from autumn onwards, the streams that dried up during the summer begin to sing again.

Description of the walk

Park in the cemetery car park.

(S/E) From the car park, return to the access road, then take the stairs on the left and follow the sign for Col des Treize Vents.

(1) Before starting the climb, turn left to the orientation table to admire the view of Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare.

(2) Return to the crossroads and the sign.

(1) Take the path opposite that climbs upwards. It is not marked on the map but is clearly visible on the ground. When you reach the hairpin bend on the D13, continue straight ahead on the path that climbs up to the junction with a drovers' road about a hundred metres further on.

(3) Follow the drovers' road that climbs to the right and stay on it until it comes out onto the D13 at the Col des Treize Vents.

(4) Turn left to follow the road carefully and climb up to the fire track that branches off to the right. Follow this track for 150 metres to reach the start of the path that leads to Pétète d'en Cabausse: cairn + barrier tape on tree.

(5) Turn right and follow this well-marked trail through the woods: orange tape and paint. At the edge of the woods, the trail is fairly well marked and lined with cairns all the way to the summit.

(6) After enjoying the breathtaking view, turn back to the fork you passed earlier.

(5) Continue the route by heading right and follow the track to the end to reach the Col de Cabausse (7) and then the Col de Pierre Plantée.

(8) Cross the road carefully and take the track that climbs to the left, makes a hairpin bend to the right and joins the junction with the track that supports the GRP® Tours des Monts et Lacs en Haut Languedoc.

(9) Take this track on the left.

(10) Pass the Col de Vente-Vieille and, at the junction, continue straight ahead on the path that climbs uphill. When the slope levels out, look out for the cairn on the right that marks the start of the climb to Mouscaillou.

(11) This climb begins with a sloping slab (be careful in wet weather), then continues along a well-marked path through broom bushes dotted with cairns.

(12) Once at the summit, enjoy the 360° panorama, then take the path downhill to reach the star-shaped crossroads at Col d'Aussières.

(13) Take the track that branches off to the right.

(14) At the end of a wide right-hand bend, be careful not to miss the path on the left that descends through the chestnut grove and reaches a track to follow on the left until you reach the nearby open space where it makes a hairpin bend to the right.

(15) Continue straight ahead on the path marked PR® Yellow: small mountain bike sign with a cross through it. Descend to the Ruisseau d'Aussières stream, following the yellow Banissous markings, and ford it: be careful, as crossing may be difficult after heavy rain. Follow the path to the hamlet of Cours le Haut, along the Ruisseau de Banissou stream.

(16) Take the PR® on the left to enter the hamlet and cross it until you reach the road. Turn right onto this road, heading towards Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare. Pass Cours le Bas (water point at the car park), then Moulin de Cours, and continue for about 150 m.

(17) Take the path on the left (GR®) which runs alongside the stream and joins the road you left earlier. Continue to the left, ignoring the road on the left which leads to Compeyre, and pass in front of the Chapelle Saint-Barthélémy. Continue straight ahead, passing in front of the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, and arrive at the foot of the Église Saint-Gervais et Saint-Prothé.

(18) Take the lane that climbs to the right, up to the church. After the church, take the lane that climbs to the right and follow it to the castle wall. Walk along the wall to reach the cemetery car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike does not present any particular topographical difficulties, but you will need to pay attention so as not to miss the following points:

(5) Ascent to La Pétète d'en Cabausse; (11) ascent to Mouscaillou and (14) path down into the chestnut grove. You will need to be able to read the map, GPS or Visorando app well.

Avoid during hot weather as the climb between Col de Treize Vents and Mouscaillou has little shade, and after heavy rain as the ford across the Aussières stream may be difficult to cross.

There is a water source at the car park in Cours le Bas.

Worth a visit

Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare has some remarkable religious remains: the Church of Saint-Gervais and Saint-Prothé, the Chapel of Saint-Barthélémy, the Chapel of the White Penitents (with a magnificent 17th-century altarpiece) and Notre-Dame de Lorette. This village invites you to wander through its medieval-style narrow streets.

7 km: Castanet-le-Haut: Visigothic site of Nougayrol.

7.5 km Lamalou-les-Bains: spa resort.

13 km Hérépian: Bell and Cowbell Museum.

Superb but somewhat difficult hike between points 11 and 12.
Please note that there are no markings or cairns to indicate the path. Quite a difficult climb through heath and rocks, but the view from the top is worth it.
