Description of the walk

Head to Argelès-Gazost and follow signs for Aucun and Arras-en-Lavedan. At the entrance to Arras-en-Lavedan, take a small road towards Lac d’Estaing.
Pass through the village of Estaing, continue to the end of the lake, cross the lake bridge and park your car (1163m).

(S) Follow the track (suitable for vehicles) for 2km south-east. Continue along the rough track heading due south.

(1) A large footbridge, known as Pont de Plasi (1,323m), takes you to the edge of the forest. From there, the path becomes steeper and climbs eastwards, winding its way up in numerous hairpin bends. Further on, the path heads due south again. Continue climbing, carefully following the path’s hairpin bends.

(2) The path emerges from the forest and becomes less steep. A sign indicating “la Cétira” stands by the path (1591m). From this point onwards, you are within the Pyrenees National Park and must observe its regulations.

(3) Pass an old stone hut, Toue de la Cétira, 1591m.

(4) You reach the first lake, Lac de Langle (1605m). Continue climbing due south.

(5) You’ll reach Lac du Plaa de Prat (1,656m).

(6) Continue on to reach the hut (1,668m). A little further on, a signpost indicates two directions. Take the left-hand path towards Lac du Pic Arrouy, heading south-east. A cairn-marked path starts in the mountain pasture and heads towards the forest (east).

(7) The path crosses a small stream and follows the other stream of the Pic d’Arrouy. A magnificent waterfall lies beside the very steep path that climbs due east. Exit the forest.

(8) Climb up through the mountain pasture, passing a restored hut reserved for the shepherd. Continue climbing due east. Soon the path follows another stream. You must cross it at a flat section. The path becomes very steep again through a maze of rocks. You must pass a spot with a few trees.

(9) The path turns south-east. Continue climbing this path through the rocks. Follow the cairns closely as you follow the switchbacks. The hike is long, so pace yourself. As you emerge from the rocks and scree onto a flat section, Lac Nère (2241m) comes into view below. Follow the path climbing south-southeast, overlooking Lac Nère. The path levels out and then descends slightly.

(10) You’ll reach Lac Long (2,326m). You’re in high mountain terrain, so stay alert.
If clouds gather or rain threatens, then after a light meal and a drink, do not hesitate to head back down to the shepherd’s hut where you can, at least, find shelter.

The return journey follows the same route in the opposite direction, taking care on certain fairly steep sections. Take extra care if the ground is wet.

Notes

There is a hut at Lac du Plaa de Prat, and another (Masseys) restored a little further up on the mountain pasture.

Use the well-marked paths; do not systematically cut corners. Erosion will render these mountain paths impassable. Think of the other hikers who will follow.
Take your rubbish back down with you. Furthermore, you are in the Pyrenees National Park.

Bring a jacket, trousers and a windbreaker.
A map (and a compass) are essential.
The path is not signposted, but is clearly marked. There are, however, a few signposts.
A few cairns after the Plaa de Prat hut will help you find your way.

Worth a visit

A lovely walk that takes you past lots of lakes.
At the start, I chose to follow the main path, which takes a detour to the right.

The paths aren’t difficult, ranging from easy to moderate.

At Lac Long, I decided to carry on to reach a third lake, Lac du Pic d’Arrouy.
It’s only 400m away with a climb of just a few dozen metres; it would be a shame to miss it.
The path runs along the left side of Lac Long, higher up as the banks are rocky scree. A lovely view looking down over Lac Long to our right.

Back at junction 6, as I wasn’t tired, I set off to the left to climb up to the Ruins and Lakes of Liantran.

Once we reached Lac Long, we continued on via the Brèche du Barbat (not to be confused with the Brèche du Houliat, which lies further to the right). The climb up to the pass is quite steep, with plenty of rocks of all sizes, but it’s passable. Once at the top, we found quite a few fairly extensive snowfields; we took a detour to the right on the way down, which was uneventful but still had some rather uncomfortable sections (quite steep and an endless scree slope ). Superb views: the climb towards Lac Long and the pass offers more pleasant scenery than the descent from the pass towards Lac du Barbat, but the circular route is well worth the detour!

Hello,

Last year, I did this hike from Lac d’Estaing to Lac Nère and Lac Long, following the Chamina guide (Les incontournables).

The fork in the path after Lac du Plaa de Prat isn’t easy to spot (a path through the grass with no signposts). After that, it’s tough (it just keeps going uphill, especially in the heat), but it’s so beautiful! Another slight difficulty is finding your way at the shepherd’s hut (left or right?). When you arrive at Lac Nère, it feels like you’re on another planet, or in paradise, but it really is planet Earth, high up in the mountains!

At Lac Long, I met a shepherd who told me you could do a circular route to get back down to Lac d’Estaing, via a pass. I think it’s via Lac du Pic Arrouy and the Barbat Pass, then Lac de Barbat... etc.

Do you know of this route? How long would it take (in summer) to complete it? Is the path visible (I imagine it’s very narrow, but is it easy to find your way)? Is it dangerous?

I’d love to go back there this summer, but doing a circular route...

Thanks, and happy hiking

It was really lovely; I went there to see the rhododendrons in bloom, and it was great fun!
