Lagorce, starting from the D558 near the Lodges de Coucouzac estate

From the Ibie Valley, make your way to and explore the little village of Lagorce by a route other than the road, setting foot on the land that nourishes the vineyards and, further on, the fields and meadows. At the end of the day or early in the morning, startle a wild boar rooting around in a field and approach the village gently, making your way up to the church from below and winding your way up the narrow cobbled streets before returning via an old path between the houses.

Description of the walk

There are no designated parking spaces. Please park along the Route de la Vallée de l’Ibie.
Do not park on the track leading to the Coucouzac estate.

(S/E) From the Route de la Vallée de l’Ibie, head north-west onto the Chemin de Vachères (the first road on the left after the entrance to the estate).
Carry on straight ahead, ignoring all turnings to the right or left. The road becomes a dirt track and runs alongside a woodland. Carry on straight ahead until you reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Carry on straight ahead until you reach a gravel track. Follow it to the first junction. Turn right.

(2) Turn left onto it and join the tarmac-surfaced Chemin de Bourgnolle. Follow it to the left; then, much further on, turn left onto the Chemin des Écoles for 100 metres and then cross the playground on your right towards the church. Walk up the next road until you reach the hairpin bend and carry on straight ahead to the church; go round it on the right and, on the other side, climb the steps leading to the main road, Rue de la Traversée.

(3) Cross the road, turn left onto the uphill street and enter the old town. Enjoy exploring the narrow, sometimes steep, sloping streets and the hidden little squares, and rejoin the route described here at Rue du Temple where it meets Rue de la Traversée.

(4) Turn right onto the Cheminou, then right again and immediately left, until you reach the edge of the houses overlooking the fields.

(5) Follow the path to the left, head downhill and walk alongside the rock on which the town is built. You’ll come out onto Route de Vallon; follow it uphill to your left for about a hundred metres.

(6) Head down Chemin de Pouzari on your right. Be careful: it is poorly maintained and the cobblestones can be slippery. At thesecond bend, you’ll spot an old drinking trough. The path joins a dirt track; follow it to the right. Carry on straight ahead, ignoring the Chemin du Coulet which branches off to the left. Continue along a path that runs partly through woodland and, at the end of the descent, you’ll reach the Y-junction you passed earlier.

(1) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to the outward journey until you reach the Route de la Vallée de l’Ibie.

Return to your car (S/E).

A lovely, easy walk to follow and a great way to explore Lagorce. We took the opportunity to have a wander around the village, although I parked in the car park in the field right next to the vineyard estate, which felt safer.

Thank you for clarifying that point about the channel. Personally, I hadn’t noticed it, and, indeed, keeping a low profile is the best course of action in this case.

An easy and very pleasant route
Just a word of warning: we got a bit confused at the Fork in the road. On the right, it says ‘private road’, but there’s no other option, so you have to take this path for about 50 metres. The locals didn’t say anything to us! We kept a low profile.

A short, easy and very pleasant route
Be careful, though: when you reach the Fork in the road, there’s a sign stating that only local residents are allowed to take the path, and there’s a chain across it. We initially gave it a wide berth, but found we couldn’t continue our walk. So we went over the chain, and 50 metres further on we were able to carry on our way.
