The Compiègne State Forest and its historical heritage

A wonderful way to explore the Compiègne State Forest, combined with historical sites along the route. The cycle paths are very pleasant and easy to ride on, with easy access to historical sites that are very close to the route.

Notes

On the route through the Compiègne State Forest, there are no water points or shelters. However, passing through the villages may provide an opportunity to take shelter and/or stock up on water and food (11), (14) and (21).

Points to note:
- In a few places, tree roots have cracked and pitted the surface of the cycle path.
- This route follows the direction of traffic as at 23 April 2022.

Tip:
It is impossible to get lost in the Compiègne Forest. Why?
On all the white signposts indicating directions at each junction, there is a Red Rectangle positioned vertically on one side of the post. Stand with your back to the Red Rectangle and go straight ahead. Repeat this at all subsequent signposts until you inevitably arrive at the Imperial Palace of Compiègne.
In fact, all these Red Rectangles are positioned pointing towards the Imperial Palace (or Château) of Compiègne.

No special equipment is required other than what you’d need for cycling.

Worth a visit

The Imperial Palace is open to visitors. Check for opening times.
Then, as you cycle along the Avenue Royale, admire the beautiful, grand mansions.

(11) The village of Le Vieux Moulin: enjoy the tranquillity of this village, situated in the heart of the Compiègne State Forest, and the distinctive bell tower of the Church of Saint-Mellon.

(14) The village of Pierrefonds with its château, which is open to visitors. Please check opening times.
Please note:
- You can cycle up to the esplanade and park your bike in the designated area.
- Picnicking is not permitted in the Château Park and dogs are not allowed.
Also worth seeing is Lake Pierrefonds and its water sports.

(21) The village of Saint-Jean-aux-Bois with the church of the Abbey of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

Between these villages lies the beautiful route through the Compiègne State Forest.

A lovely cycle ride through the Compiègne Forest; the path is in excellent condition. We stopped in Pierrefonds for lunch and a tour of the château and its grounds, before returning to Compiègne for a tour of its château. I highly recommend it!
