Description of the walk

(S/E) The route starts at Place d’Arme in Phalsbourg. Take Rue du Général Leclerc and pass under the archway of the Lobau barracks, then go round the military grounds via the path on your left. When you reach the junction with the D604, continue along the small road almost directly opposite.

(1) Turn left to walk alongside the Jewish cemetery and head down the Brunnenthal valley (Blue Triangle signpost).

(2) Following the same marker, cross the lock and turn right onto the towpath. Continue along this for 500m, then take the path on the left. Go straight on once you reach the D38.

(3) Immediately after passing under the railway bridge, turn left, continue for 300m along this path, then take the one that climbs to the right (Red Cross sign).

(4) 200m after a hairpin bend to the left, turn right and continue straight on until you reach the forest road.

(5) Follow the Yellow Cross sign by turning right, enter Hultehouse, go down Rue de la Cote then Rue de l'Eglise to pass the church and continue straight on along Route de Lutzelbourg.

(6) After passing the cemetery, follow the Blue Ring sign by turning right into Rue du Stade, then immediately left onto Route Forestière du Stade. After about 200m, turn left and continue straight on until you reach Lutzelbourg Castle.

(7) At Lutzelbourg Castle, take the path on the right to head down into the town and join Rue Charles Ackermann. Follow this street to the right, then take the first left to cross the bridge over the Marne-Rhine Canal.

(8) Just after the bridge, turn right and then immediately left onto Chemin de Bahnel. At the end of this, continue straight on, then take the first road on the right (Route des Trois Maisons) for about 200m.

(9) Leave the road and take the sharp right-hand bend onto a path that winds its way uphill (follow the Yellow Rectangle markers until the end of the walk).

(10) At the Rocher du Krappenfels, turn left and join the Route Forestière du Centenaire. Continue straight on along this road, which becomes the Rue du Krappenfels.

(11) At the end of Rue du Krappenfels, take the road on the right (Rue du Schaffeneck) and then, after 300m, the one on the left. Continue straight on until you reach the Jewish cemetery.

(1) Turn left and follow the same route as on the way there to return to your car (S/E).

Once we reached the lock (point 2), the two passages on the gates were off-limits to pedestrians. The lock is under video surveillance. With no other choice, we crossed over – without incident.
The markings are no longer up to date: for example, there is no longer a red circle or red cross at point 3, but a blue ring.

Watch out for the marking error that’s already been pointed out (that’ll teach me to read the comments…): point 3 is a red circle, not a Red Cross.

Otherwise, there are some really lovely sections!
Thanks

Hello,

well done on this route, though there’s a small error in the signposting at point no. 3:

Immediately after passing under the railway bridge, turn left, continue for 300m along this path and then take the one that goes up to the right (Red Cross marker) --> it is a Red Disc, not a Red Cross.

See you soon

A lovely, well-signposted walk, with Lutzelbourg Castle as its highlight
