The Rajol Corniche

From the Dourbie Valley, the path climbs gently towards the Corniche de Rjaol, where there is a magnificent view of the Dourbie and the Larzac, and to the south, the Millau Viaduct. A very scenic walk best done in spring.

Description of the walk

Coming from the stream, drive through the village of La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite and, after crossing a bridge over the Dourbie on the way out of the village, you’ll find a small car park on the left.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, follow the D991, go past the bridge, cross another bridge and arrive at a fork.

(1) Ignore the road on the left (which will be your return route) and continue straight ahead towards a narrow lane. Pass the church, then the cemetery, and you’ll reach the start of a path on the right.

(2) Follow this path as it winds its way up and reach the grassy plateau.

(3) Continue along the path as it winds along the ledge and heads north until you reach a fork.

(4) Turn left onto the path which continues to climb up to the plateau, offering magnificent views of the Larzac, the Dourbie Valley and, in the distance, the Millau Viaduct.

(5) Continue climbing along the botanical trail to reach the Rochers de Roques Altès, which is comparable to the site at Montpellier-le-Vieux.

(6) On the left, you can see an arch with a magnificent view in the distance. Continue straight on to an old Causse farmhouse that has been restored.

(7) Carry on, cross a road and follow a forest track that descends onto a wide, stony track. Leave this track to the left, make a circular loop and rejoin the track further on.

(8) Continue left along this track, which winds its way down. You will arrive at the Ravin du Riou.

(9) Turn left and follow a tarmac road downhill to a path starting on the right.

(10) Follow this path down towards the village of La Roque-Saint-Marguerite. (Caution: the descent is technical). Join a road.

(11) Take this road to the right and return to the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Turn right and return to the car park after the bridge (S/E).

Worth a visit

View of the Millau Viaduct. Best enjoyed in spring (when the flowers are in full bloom).

A very interesting hike with varied scenery; the proximity to the ruiniform rocks was truly spectacular and was greatly appreciated by our group of hikers.
At point no. 4, at the Fork in the road, we made a detour to visit the small hamlet of Montméjean, which is currently being renovated with the help of the Aveyron department, which has provided a small room for visitors explaining the restoration process. With this detour, we covered 16 km in 6 hours, excluding our picnic. Our entire group of 13 people thoroughly enjoyed this hike.
