Île d’Yeu by bike

A comprehensive cycle tour of the island, which requires a reasonable level of fitness, as the full route is nearly 35 km. It’s easy to shorten the route if necessary. Alternatively, there’s the option of an e-bike.

Description of the route

Set off from Joinville harbour.

(S/E) Follow the quays (opposite the marina), Quai Carnot, then Quai de la Chapelle to reach “Plage de la Borgne”

(1) At the roundabout, continue along Rue du Nord (to the left of the supermarket), then turn right onto Rue des Bossilles to reach “Plage du Cours du Moulin”.

(2) Carry on along Rue des Roses to reach “Plage des Roses”, then continue along Route des Anglais, which leads to “Plage de la Pulante”

(3) Follow the coast along Route des Petits Fradets until you reach “Plage de la Gournaise”.

(4) Note the Dolmen des Petits Fradets on your left. Continue along the road, keeping to the right at the junctions to stay as close to the coast as possible. Pass Plage Sainte-Cécile and, when you reach Plage du But, take the short path to the right to reach the orientation table at the tip of Pointe du But.

(5) Look out for the “Récif des Chiens Perrins” with its marker. Return to the Route du Ponant and turn right. Follow the coast to end up at “Plage de la Belle Maison”.

(6) Leave the coast by turning left, then right at the next junction, and follow the Route des Sabias, which takes you back to the coast and on to “Plage des Sables Rouis”. Pass an old oven marking the entrance to the Châtelet Peninsula (you can leave your bikes here and explore on foot – views of the old castle and the 41-metre-high lighthouse).

(7) Get back on your bikes to continue along the road, and you’ll reach “Plage des Sabias”. Ride past it until you reach a car park on the left.

(8) Take the path on the right that leads away from the coast. At the next junction, take a sharp right-hand bend, stay on the main path, head towards the ocean, and make your way to the “Vieux Château”.

(9) Take the time to park your bikes and have a look around. Once you’ve enjoyed the spot, carry on along the coastal path. This leads away from the coast and comes to a large junction.

(10) Carry on to the right along Rue du Trou d’Enfer, then continue along a path. Then take the first left and follow Rue de la Fousselange. At the three-way junction, leave this street and keep right onto Rue du Bois d’Amour. At the end of this road, at No. 16, turn right onto Chemin Sainte-Catherine, follow it to the end, and you’ll arrive at a crêperie.

(11) Turn right onto Route de la Meule for a round trip to Port de la Meule.

(12) A must-see on the island – visit the little chapel on foot. Return to the junction by the crêperie.

(11) On your return, carry on to the right along Rue de Ker Rabaud, past the horse riding centre, and head for the next fork in the road.

(13) Turn right onto Chemin de la Pierre Tremblante and head for the site of the same name.

(14) Return to the previous junction.

(13) Carry on to the right and, shortly afterwards, you’ll reach a four-way junction.

(15) Turn right for a round trip to the beach and Anse des Fontaines.

(16) Return to the previous junction.

(19) Turn left for a round trip along the path leading to the Bec du Châtelet des Vielles.

(20) Return to the previous junction.

(19) Turn right and head for Plage des Vieilles at La Croix.

(21) At the junction with the cross on your left, continue to the right onto Rue de la Croix, then keep right onto Chemin de la Courane. Follow the coast until you reach a crossroad, Route des Corbeaux.

(23) Head back to the junction with Chemin de la Courane.

(22) Turn right onto Chemin de l’Ilias, which runs alongside the Marais de la Croix. Continue along Chemin de la Gorelle and Chemin des Borderies until you reach Marais Salé and its beach.

(24) At the end of Chemin des Borderies, keep left onto Chemin de la Bergeresse, then turn right onto Chemin des Pentecôtes. At the junction with Chemin de Ker Chiron, continue straight ahead – slightly to the right – onto Chemin du Diable, passing a prehistoric burial mound. At the end of the path, turn right to reach a crossroad.

(25) Turn left onto Route des Sapins, continue along Rue Richelieu, and reach the Church of Notre-Dame de la Blanche.

(26) Directly in front of the church, turn right onto Rue du Gouverneur; at the end of this street, turn right onto Rue des Druides, then immediately left onto Rue de Ker Guérin. At the three-way junction, keep right onto Rue du Ker Viroux, then turn right straight away onto Rue de la Fossé du Cens.

(28) At the multi-way junction, continue left onto Rue de la Belle Poule. Carry on along Chemin du Frinaud; at the end, turn right and, at the roundabout, head straight ahead onto Rue George Clémenceau, until you reach No. 43.
