French Guyana walks

A short family hike where you might spot a few sloths.

The trail, located in the Régina–Saint-Georges national forest, passes through primary forests, ravines, streams, marshy lowlands and areas of boulders. At the summit, at an altitude of 138 m, an exceptional panorama unfolds before you, combining the rocky outcrops of the Savane-Roche Virginie inselberg with a view of the canopy. ⚠️ 21/04/2026: hike modified to a return route to remain on the marked route within the French Guiana Biological Reserve.

14 km from Kourou, this hike is well known to locals and tourists alike. Easy to find. Easy to follow. Not too long (advertised as 3 hours at the reception but can be shortened to 1 hour if you are in a hurry). But with a few difficulties: sometimes steep climbs, slippery terrain, which can be quite muddy in places depending on the rain. Allows you to explore the rainforest without the risk of getting lost. Towards the end, it offers an exceptional view stretching from the Guiana Space Centre to Kourou and the Kourou River. Monkeys are rarely seen. But you can see blue butterflies (morphos) and hear and spot sentinel birds.

Sophie’s circular loop takes you along the tracks through the logging areas, returning via the aerodrome and Crique Daouda for a quick refreshment break.
