Great Dunmow Town Trail

A circular walk around the small Essex town of Great Dunmow.
With plenty of historic buildings, a fine 13th century church, some great pubs and a fantastic Indian Restaurant this provides any visitor a taste of this ancient town. The walk is simple and easy and one cannot visit Dunmow without discovering the interesting history of the Dunmow Fitch which is the main feature to this walk.

Description of the walk

Start: Beyond the Queen Victoria pub, Great Dunmow. (CM6 1DL) Grid ref. TL 621 219

(S/E) Start the walk on the western side of the village, on Stortford Road. Just beyond the Queen Victoria pub, proceed along the main Stortford Road into town, bearing left at the roundabout into Rosemary Lane, then take the second left onto The Downs which is part of the Saffron Trail.

(1) Keep to this pathway which will turn left then right, then lead onto a housing estate. Walk straight ahead. At the time of writing another development was under-way beyond the houses. A footpath leads through this, diagonally across the fields and down to a track. Ignore the paths leading away from this up to a pond.

(2) At the track turn right and follow this down to the road which emerges onto the main road, look directly across and slightly to the left and there is a path between the houses. This is easy to miss. This leads into open fields where a public footpath crosses down the hill towards the church.

Keep straight ahead into the car park to the cemetery and then follow the road out on the right. The church is on the left with a wooden framed house on the right. The church includes a short walk down to the river which is worth investigating. The road leads out onto Church Street at a double bend.

(3) Turn right. To the left, on the corner of the junction is the former Six Bells pub, and further along this road is a bridge over the river. Straight ahead is the Angel and Harp pub and just past this, where the road takes a sharp bend to the right is a footpath on the left which leads through the meadows adjoining the river.

Follow the well-trodden footpath through the meadows, passing through gaps in the hedgerows for approx 700 yds where it meets a paved path.

(4) To the left, this passes over the river, to the right it leads through trees back to town which is the way to go. When the path meets a road continue straight ahead, following the twisting roads through to the main road (B1008). To the right, just down the road on the left is The Doctor's Pond.

(5) To the left the road leads into the town centre. Either route can be taken. If going into town, turn left at the junction by the Clock Tower.
If taking the pond route, walk along the edge of the pond and across a green up to a road. Turn left and follow the road (Rosemary Lane) up to Stortford Road. In either case, Stortford Road will lead to the starting point. (S/E)

Hi Simon!

Sorry to read about the experience. The walk was done quite a while ago and kindly shared with the community by Griffmonster. I guess the author hasn't re-walked it for quite a while. So thank you for this great feedback! That's one of the purposes of this community to help each other this way.
I just contacted the author to see how we could improve the description and route map with what you shared. If you have any further details please do not hesitate to share as it will help.

Thanks again and enjoy your walks!

This walk was only uploaded 4 days ago, but it already appears to need updating. The Saffron Way at the end of (1) is completely blocked due to the housing development. We needed to backtrack and go down some residential roads to find the Cricketers pub.

Once we'd made it there, the route description says you arrive "opposite the now closed Cricketers pub. Cross the road, and look for a footpath between the houses on the left." I think most people reading that would assume the footpath would be to the left of the closed Cricketers pub as you face it, but in fact, having searched for it for a while including walking up and down another road nearby, it was in fact to the right of the Cricketers pub!

We ended up needing to rush back after we reached the Angel & Harp pub, so missed that part of the walk, so I think we may have missed any references to the Dunmow Fitch, but I do at least have this walk to thank for making me read up about that ancient tradition which I'd never previously heard of.

Only other things to mention are that it's a nice walk (and I think we probably missed the nicest part so will probably re-walk it at some point), also the map isn't much help and it's a little muddy at points.
