Description of the walk

Start: Grand Canyon car park near Blackheath

Waymarkers : Grand Canyon Track

(S/E) From the car park, walk towards the toilets and turn right on the path past the toilets following the Grand Canyon Track waymarker. When you reach the junction, turn left as you go, and walk under the powerlines. Soon, you will walk parallel to the road on your right-hand side. Always keep straight, even passing Rough Track Lodge, until you reach a car park. (Neates Glen Car Park)

(1) At the car park, walk left go through the gate and down the steps. You are now walking into among eucalyptus trees down several steps along switchbacks. Eventually, you will handrail a stream as you go downhill still walking through ferns and trees until you start reaching the cayon.

(2) Go down steeper steps. Be careful as it can be quite slippery and mind your head. This is a straight forward footpath. You soon have a stream on your left which you will have to cross several times using stepping stones. This will alternate with uphill and downhill steps with views of the canyon.

(3) At the next junction, at the bottom of the steps you can take a detour left to enjoy walking under the sandstone cliffs. Otherwise, turn right following the signpost.

(4) Walk through a tunnel (mind your head here) and under a beautiful waterfall. Carry on along the canyon.

(5) Then at some stage along the way, you will cross a bridge with a waterfall before you carry on.

(6) At the next juntcion, take a little detour to explore left otherwise, turn right and cross the stream through stepping stones. Further on, keep straight down to cross again the stream and stepping stones. There will be a few stepping-stone river crossings from that point and keep following the signpost straight.

(7) You then reach steep steps which you follow all the way up to go out of the canyon and again into the eucalyptus woodland.

(8) At the top of the flight of steps enjoy a viewpoint right then go left towards Evans Lookout up the stairs. This is the last stretch uphill rewarded with Evans Lookout where you will find a trig point and shelter.

(9) Go past the shelter on your left-hand side and carry on the paved path. On the way up, at a junction, you can take a detour to Valley View lookout otherwise carry on to the toilets and car park. There is also an information board and the start of the Clifftop Track.

(10) Cross pedestrian crossing straight ahead following the waymarker towards Grand Canyon Carpark right. Walk on the footpath along the roadside which then goes away from the road following the waymarkers. You then reach the toilets and car park you found at the start of the walk. (S/E)
