From one bank of the Fontaulière to the other

A short walk from Montpezat to the hamlets of Les Grisières and Le Villaret, passing through a chestnut grove - the only slight difficulty on the route - and the humpback bridge, for a family outing.

Description of the walk

Start : Depart from Place de la Paix, parking between the Post Office and the War Memorial.

(S/E) Go up along the car park under the buildings that seem to block the square to pass through the "Double Noire" (A), access to Rue Victor Hugo (D536) by passing under the houses. Turn right out of the Double.

(1) Then, turn left up Rue de la Mazade. Continue straight ahead on the cobbled path ("Calade" (B)). Ignore the Chemin des Endettés to the right

(2) Cross the Mazade stream on the small bridge. Continue up-hill along the South-West-facing calade.

(3) At the hiking signpost, continue straight on towards Le Roux, les Grisières. At the next crossroads, just over 50 m away, continue straight ahead on the tarmac road.

(4) After the Arzalier stream, a small path on the left leads down to the house at l'Arzalier, a short-cut to reach the Route des Grizières.

(5) Follow the asphalt road downhill, ignoring the paths on the right.

(6) Cross the La Fontolière River (C) on the Gournier bridge. Continue along the road on the other side. Ignore a private track on the right leading to Grisières Basses, then a dirt track on the left leading to the house at Lambert. Climb again, ignoring a cement track on the left before the bridge over the Grisières stream (D).

(7) Cross the bridge and continue on the dirt track. At the hamlet of Grisières Hautes, take the grassy path to the right in front of the houses. Follow the yellow markings on a green background.

(8) After the last house, ensure that you take the path to the left in the chestnut grove as indicated by the markings and continue on the path to the bridge.

(9) Cross the stream on the Pont Bossu. Go up the other side onto the tarmac road and continue to the right.
Pass through the hamlet of Villaret, continue on the road to La Fontaulière, passing the start of Chemin du Château. Go down the calade to the bridge over the Mazade stream.

(2) Continue left on Chemin des Endettés (E). Pass by the town hall car park, then leave the path on the left and take the stairs down to Voie Jules César.

(10) On Voie Jules César, turn right towards Fontaine Ronde and continue right onto Rue Montgolfier.
Opposite Place de la République (Mairie at far end), turn left into Rue du Chanton. Turn left in front of the café tabac, skirt the church and return via Place de la Paix to the starting point(S/E).

In the nearby area

(A) "Double ", passage between houses that was later covered over by the owners to connect or extend existing buildings.
Here, the Double is called "Black" because it bends at an angle and was very dark before it was lit.

(B) Calade, path paved with stones jammed together, with transverse water flows.

(9) In reference to the 12th-century Château de Montlaur at the end of the path to the left, only parts of the walls remain. It was a garrison castle responsible for securing the road from the Rhone valley to Le Puy (also a toll station). Privately owned, access is forbidden as it is dangerous.

(C) "La Fontolière ", three different spellings still in use: Fontolière, Fontaulière or Fonteaulière. An underground hydroelectric power station has been installed below the riverbed downstream.
It is driven by the waters of the Loire, Gage and Veyradeyre rivers, as well as those of Lac d'Issarlès.

(D) To be seen at Les Grisières :
before entering the hamlet, a stone cross engraved with a naïve Christ ;
in the hamlet, walk 10 m up the alley on the left, and you'll see some beautiful openings in the facade of a house on the right.

Humpback bridge, so called locally because of its particular shape, which allows water to run off during Cevennes storms. Date of construction unknown, but the trial of the Montpezat witch in 1519 mentions a footbridge over the river, not a bridge.

(E) Chemin des Endettés, so called because it ran behind the houses on the main street and was used by villagers with debts to the various businesses on the street.
