Along the chain of ponds in Burgwalden

The Augsburg Forests are certainly one of the lesser-known nature reserves in Germany. The circular walk along the chain of ponds near Burgwalden offers nature-loving walkers a glimpse into one of the many different landscapes the nature reserve has to offer. Here – on a section of the Swabian-Allgäu Long-Distance Walking Trail – countless animals live that are otherwise rarely seen.

Description of the walk

Start: The circular route begins at the walkers’ car park on Anhauser Straße in Burgwalden.

(S/E) From the car park, we walk along Anhauser Straße out of the village towards the north (signposted ‘Schwäbis-Allgäuer Weitwanderweg’). After just under 50 metres, before reaching the first pond, we turn right onto the path.

(1) We cross the Anhauser Bach and walk between two further ponds to the edge of the forest. Behind the first trees, the narrow path (unmarked) turns off to the left.

(2) It takes us on along the Bruckmahdweiher. At the end of the Bruckmahdweiher, we keep to the right at the fork, then turn left and follow the path.

(3) This soon takes us past a wetland area on the left-hand side, which forms the southern part of the Ödweiher. Beyond the Ödweiher, we cross the junction and continue straight ahead.

(4) We then continue to the right along the bank of the Tannetweiher through the woods.

(5) At the end of the pond, just past a bench, we come to a junction, which we cross straight ahead and continue along the narrow forest path. From here, the forest path becomes somewhat rough-going.

(6) It takes us through another wetland area by the Anhauser Bach.

(7) This stretches all the way to the Burlafinger Weiher. We walk past this too and, at its far end, come to a T-junction. Here, we turn left.

(8) After a good 100 m, we turn left again onto the wide gravel path along which the Schwäbisch-Allgäu Long-Distance Hiking Trail runs.

We follow the gravel path for about 800 m, then take the left-hand branch at the fork and immediately turn left again, walking southwards along the Tannetweiher (marking: Schwäbisch-Allgäuer-Weitwanderweg). We keep slightly to the left as we walk along the Tannetweiher and continue straight on behind the pond. The path takes us along the ridge slightly above the Ödweiher

(9) On the right-hand side is a sprawling golf course belonging to the Golfclub Augsburg e.V., which runs right up to the footpath. We go straight on at the next junction and continue through a small wooded area alongside the Bruckmahdweiher (signposted: Schwäbisch-Allgäuer-Weitwanderweg).

After a while, we come to Anhäuser Straße. We walk past the car park on the left and Gut Walden(10) on the right.

(11) We then follow Galgenbergstraße along the Schlossweiher. At the fork by a couple of small ponds, we turn left at the edge of the woodland and, at the next opportunity behind the ponds, turn left again, following the Schwäbisch-Allgäuer-Weitwanderweg. We cross the Anhauser Bach.

(12) Behind the Kotweiher on the right-hand side, we come across the Buchkopf spring, which is enclosed in stone.
We continue along the path through the wood. After about 700 m, we leave the Schwäbisch-Allgäuer-Weitwanderweg by turning left at the junction. After about 400 m, the woodland path ends at Attenhofer Straße, which leads us left back towards Burgwalden. We walk through the village, passing the Schlossweiher on the left and the Mühlweiher on the right, and turn right onto Anhauser Straße just before Gut Walden (10).

(S/E) This takes us back to the starting point, the car park on Anhauser Straße.

Notes

The circular walk takes you through one of the very diverse landscapes within the Augsburg Forests Nature Park, which is characterised by near-natural woodlands as well as idyllic open spaces. About half of the walk follows near-natural forest paths, which can get a bit muddy when wet. The gravel path to the west of the ponds is easily accessible all year round.

Equipment

  • Although the walk can be managed in summer with comfortable shoes, sturdy footwear with a good tread is essential in wet or snowy conditions.
  • Around 50 per cent of the circular route runs through woodland; the rest is completely unshaded. On hot days, it is advisable to bring good sun protection and insect repellent.
  • It is advisable to carry plenty of drinks with you.
  • There are very few benches along the route for a short break.
  • Due to the partly unpaved paths, which are littered with roots and stones, the walk is not recommended for families with prams or pushchairs.

Worth a visit

Food and drink
There is a restaurant at the golf club (9) and at Gut Walden (10). Otherwise, there are other restaurants in Bobingen.

Dear Alain,
I’m delighted that you went on our hike. You’re quite right, the return journey along the golf course is a bit dull. But the ponds are really lovely. We even spotted two snakes along the way. There’s quite a lot going on if you take a little time to appreciate nature.
Best wishes, Michaela

Hello,
I’m really sorry about that – it can always happen that I accidentally forget something or that the route guidance isn’t quite as clear in my mind as it was when I set it up. I’ll have another look at it.
Best wishes, Michaela

A tip for using the app
You don’t need a network connection to use the app.
- If, before each hike, when you have Wi-Fi or 4G/5G,
=> download the base map
=> add the relevant walk to your favourites (this makes it easier to find when you’re setting off)
=> check all this offline from home

Unfortunately, there was already a mistake at the second point. At the fork, we turned right and then left, as instructed, even though it was already leading us away from the ponds. The junction at point 3 didn’t actually exist. Luckily, we’d downloaded Google Maps, as there’s no mobile reception in that area. In any case, we ended up taking a detour through the woods. From then on, we just followed our instincts, and it worked out fine. We didn’t look at the route itself again after that. At least it was thanks to the route that we had the idea of going for a walk there in the first place.

The beginning is particularly pleasant, as the return trip on the other side is uninteresting, running alongside a golf course with no place to stop for a picnic. It is better to return by the same route (on the right side of the lake). It is very pleasant to take a nap while listening to the ducks and birds.
