Col de Corps via Chazal, starting from La Cluse

A route at the foot of Devoluy, which climbs up the Torrent de l'Abbéou, then joins the mountain pastures on the sunny side of Montagne de Lèche. The aim is to reach the Col de Corps, at the foot of Tête de Garnesier.

This route is classified as difficult becausesome of the paths through the meadows are not easy to follow after the Fontaine des Ruisseaux, and then as you approach the pass, some sections of unstable terrain are quite steep.

Description of the walk

From the D994 between Veynes and Gap, take the D937 towards Le Devoluy. Just before the hairpin bends on the climb to the Col du Festre, turn left to cross the village of La Cluse and park in the car park at the western end of the village, just after the small hairpin bend.
To avoid walking along the track, you can drive along it and park in one of the few spaces on the left, just before the bridge.
It is also possible to take a coach towards Le Devoluy, for example the Z or 515 line, departing from Veynes.

(S/E) From the car park, take the forest road and follow the GR®94 (white and red markings) westwards.

(1) Do not cross the bridge, but take the wide forest path that branches off to the right towards the north-northwest. Leave the GR® trail and follow the Torrent de l'Abbéou stream to the Voran sheepfold.

(2) Stay on the left bank of the Torrent de l'Abbéou and continue along the path which crosses a stream, often dry, and follows the Abbéou for a short while before turning off to the right and climbing up a few hairpin bends.

(3) Pass in front of the Chalet Pastoral de Chazal (sheepfold) and continue along the path that crosses the Torrent des Plates (often dry) heading west. Following the EDF power line, the track leads to a plateau at around 1,650 metres, just before the Fontaine des Ruisseaux. Cross two ravines before climbing a sparse slope to a pass on the ridge (pylon).

(4) Cross the foot of a grassy diagonal (somewhat hidden) that climbs from left to right. Pass at the foot of a wooden post, and above it, cross to the left, over terrain that requires more attention, to reach afirst metal pylon. Then, via more or less grassy slopes, reach the Col de Corps, marked by asecond metal pylon. The Jarjatte valley then opens up to the west.

(5) Return via the same route you took to descend to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Fountain and lodge in the village of La Cluse.

Picnic area with toilets near the car park. You can dip your feet in the stream.

Caution: the path becomes more difficult to follow after the Fontaine des Ruisseaux (meadows) and the terrain is rather unstable and steep as you approach the pass!

Worth a visit

La Cluse, a small village perched on a rocky outcrop, is the only passageway providing access to Dévoluy from the south. It is also the only part of Dévoluy that belongs to the Durance basin, via the Petit Buech, into which the Béoux flows. In Vivaro-Alpine Occitan, La Cluza is a narrow valley that can easily be closed off or protected. In 1245, the cartulary of Durbon Abbey mentions the existence of a fortified site there: castrum de la Cluza.

This is the southern gateway to Dévoluy, a valley offering numerous hikes accessible to most people.
The two resorts of La Joue du Loup and Super Dévoluy offer skiing and other mountain activities.

Although they are on the other side of Dévoluy, the sites of Mère Église and the Gillardes resurgences (38) are worth seeing.

Alternative route for the return journey: before reaching the point (3), descend between the Torrent des Plates and the foot of the Baume rocks to admire the ammonite slab. You then join the Torrent de l'Abéou just before the hamlet of Les Pierres Taillées.

This hike deserves to be classified as difficult
Some paths are not too easy to find after the fountain of streams but in the meadows
Then there are steep slopes and fairly unstable terrain to reach the pass

@User 6065458: Yes, if the trail continues after the Chalet Pastoral de Chazal (point 3), it disappears shortly after the Fontaine des Ruisseaux. There is a 450 m elevation gain to reach the pass, off the trail, but it doesn't seem too difficult as the climb is mainly through alpine pastures.
