Cholsey to Goring Railway Station

A varied walk. Some gentle hills at first with good views across the open countryside. The second half of the walk is along the Thames Path. Some boggy sections to be avoided. There are no stiles but one awkward footbridge to cross.

Description of the walk

Start : Cholsey Railway Station (OX10 9QD) Grif ref. SU 584 860

(S/E) From the station forecourt immediately turn left through the gate into the alley-way. Keep Ahead on the road to the corner then turn left under the railway bridge on the bridleway.

(1) On reaching the lane, turn right and soon left on the bridleway again. Continue ahead past farm buildings with a large field on the left. Follow the path round to the right to a path junction.

(2) Turn left on the track with the hedge on the left. Soon the landscape opens up with some fine views. Keep to the track as it swings to the left before reaching a lane.

(3) Cross and climb the hill opposite along a hedged path. Continue with the hedge on the left at first then opening up with more good views across the valley. Follow the path left as it detours through the woodland surrounding Breach House to reach a lane.

(4) Cross the lane on the footpath leading to Moulsford. From here there are more open views towards the Downs and to the Chiltern Hills across the river valley. Keep to the path as it veers right at the end of the hedge to meet a cross track.

(5) Turn left down the hill. On entering Moulsford village turn right along the lane which leads to a playing field.

(6) Bear left across the field to a marker Post. Here turn right on the footpath keeping to the field edge. Reaching residential road turn right and follow it round to the left to reach the main road.

(7) Cross carefully into Ferry Lane, now on the Thames Path. The ferry ceased operating in 1967. Bear left past the Beetle & Wedge to reach the river.

(8) Turn right along the river bank and follow it pleasantly for about one and a half miles. After the lock keep ahead into woodland when the surfaced track veers right.

(9) Take care over a very steep footbridge. As the weir comes into view the path turns away from the river and crosses a waterway.

(10) At the path junction, turn left on the raised walkway along an avenue of trees. Go past St Mary's Church to reach the main road in Streatley.

(11) Turn left past the Swan Hotel and cross the bridge into Goring. Go along Goring High Street and keep ahead across the railway.

(12) At a road junction turn right for the station. (S/E)
