Description of the walk

The departure point is from the picnic area on the banks of the Serein next to the old bridge (right bank).

(S) Leave the bridge behind you and take the road towards Viviers until the first bend.

(1) Head towards the Écuries d'attelage du Serein, where international competitions are regularly held. Follow the path that runs between cultivated fields and meadows, along the Serein.

(2) Follow the tractor tracks across the fields, which will take you back to the gravel path connecting Chemilly to Poilly

(3) Stay on the path, along the mini cliff created by the meander of the Serein.

(4) At the junction with the road, take the path on the right that leads back along the Serein and follow the river until you reach the mill. This superb mill offers guest rooms.

(5) Swimming and picnicking are possible on the banks or the small islands at the foot of the weir. Take the alley opposite, slightly to the left (zigzag to the left).

(6) Take the second lane on the left and climb to the top of the plateau.

(7) At the end of the path, turn left onto the path that runs between the fields.

(8) At the end of the road, turn right, then take the first road on the right again. Go down towards the corner of the forest.

(9) Turn left at the edge of the forest. Be careful, the path is not visible. Follow the forest and the edge of the field for about 100 m.

(10) The start of the path through the forest is located exactly in the hollow of the valley.
Go down the path through the forest until you reach the D45 road.

(11) Cross it, then take the path that continues opposite, towards Le Serein, until you reach the stone ford.
Cross the Serein. A small bridge allows you to cross without getting your feet wet, except during periods of high water. Join the road, then cross the bridge and enter the village.
Take Rue du Moulin on the left, then immediately turn right into a small lane with a few steps, which leads to the church square. You can take a detour before taking the small lane to go to the mill, located 100 metres away.
You will arrive at the village square in front of the town hall (E).

Notes

The path is perfectly accessible by bike, on horseback or on foot.
A ford at the arrival point in Sainte-Vertu is passable on horseback. A small footbridge allows you to cross on foot or by bike.

Worth a visit

There are lovely views from the Poilly mill and its weir and from the Sainte-Vertu mill.
Picnics can be enjoyed on tables by the water in Chemilly, Poilly and Sainte-Vertu, and swimming is possible in the river.
In Sainte-Vertu, there is a very good hotel/restaurant in the mill, decorated with old millstones, and guest rooms on the banks of the Serein.

Hike completed on 19 August 2025
Partially impassable route:
- at point 2, the "crossing through the field" is no longer possible because the field is now a fenced-in meadow. You must turn back.
- at point 10, you will reach a dead end. The path does not continue straight ahead. The sign indicates to join the path at the bottom of the valley, but this requires crossing a steep (and very soft) field. I tried on foot, but at the bottom of the valley, the path through the woods appears to be unmaintained (there are trees blocking the way). As a result, I turned back and reached Sainte-Vertu via the main road, which was much less pleasant. A real shame!
The rest of the route is very pleasant.
