Canal, ponds and Art Deco architecture near the Maison de Marie-Jeanne

A very easy walk or cycle – whether on a road bike or mountain bike – refreshing in summer and full of beautiful colours in autumn, along the Sambre–Oise Canal (the Stevenson Route on EuroVelo 3) and past the ponds.
Discover the Art Deco heritage found in the villages. There’s the option to visit a museum, the Maison de Marie-Jeanne – an absolute must-see and the real icing on the cake of this route.

Description of the route

Start from the car park at the Place du Musée in Alaincourt.

(S/E) Leave the car park, turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle, then left onto Rue de la Papeterie.

(1) Take thefirst street on the left, Rue du Vicquet, then Rue de l’Hermitage. In Berthenicourt, enter via Rue du Tour de Ville and turn right onto Rue des Tilleuls. At the end, turn left onto Rue du Moulin and continue to the Grande Rue.

(2) At the small square, turn right towards the church onto Rue de Senercy.

(3) Ride past the church (well worth a visit) and continue along this small road to the Sambre–Oise Canal, where there is a lovely view of the mill.

(4) Take the towpath on the right, Veloroute No. 3, known as the “Voie Stevenson” on this section of the route. Go under the motorway and you’ll reach a road (D132).

(5) Turn left – be careful! Visibility is limited – cross the bridge and follow the road until you reach the left-hand bend.

(6) As you come out of the bend, continue to the right onto Rue Sainte-Benoîte. You’ll reach the junction by the church.

(7) Turn right onto Rue des Prés, cross the River Oise and the canal, then turn sharply right and then left. Walk alongside a pond and turn right. Go round asecond pond on your left and continue along Rue Camille Desmoulins. Carry on along Rue Acchille Langlet, then turn left onto Rue de la République.

(8) Take in the few beautiful Art Deco-style balconies and railings visible in Möy-de-l’Aisne and carry on until you reach Rue Bernard Testart, which you should follow to the right.

(9) Turn left onto Avenue Suzanne Deutsch de la Meurthe and head towards the junction at the War Memorial.

(10) Go round the Town Hall on the right and join Rue Clémenceau (D34), turning right. At the end, turn left onto Rue Pasteur.

(11) At the bend, turn left carefully onto Rue Berthelot (note the beautiful Art Deco balcony on the white house). At the end, continue to the right (D34), go under the motorway and then head for the car park at the Maison de Marie-Jeanne (S/E).

Worth a visit

.(S/E) The ‘La Maison de Marie-Jeanne’ Museum: a small, very interesting museum, suitable for families, fun and attractive, which can be visited in an hour, with an audio guide app available to download onto your smartphone here.

(3) The church is open for the J.E.P. from 3 pm to 5 pm; be sure to admire the stained-glass work by G. Girodon.

(7) The entrance is via the cemetery, which still surrounds the church; it’s open exceptionally for the J.E.P. You’ll be surprised.

(9) The building just round the corner, the “Centre d’Hygiène”, with its inscription still visible above the porch. It was built with the support of Suzanne Deutsch de La Meurthe, as were other buildings in the town.

(10) The history of Moy and the reconstruction work around the Suzanne Deutsch de la Meurthe memorial for the J.E.P.

(11) The Suzanne Deutsch de la Meurthe monument; other information panels can be seen around the village explaining Suzanne’s role in the post-1917 reconstruction.
