Buron des Rajas - Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac

This third stage of the Tour des Monts d'Aubrac is one of the most varied. It contrasts the crossing of the wild, desert-like expanses of the Monts d'Aubrac in the first half with the coolness of the Aubrac National Forest and the Tourbières Nature Reserve in the second half. From the Buron des Rajas, isolated at an altitude of 1,300 metres, the stage ends in the small village of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac, at the bottom of the Boralde de Saint-Chély valley, 500 metres lower down.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Monts d'Aubrac

Description of the walk

Start from the Lodge du Buron des Rajas.

Part of theGRP® Tour des Monts d'Aubrac,GR®6andGR® 670 (Chemin Urbain V) – white/red markings

(S) Take the path in front of the buron, heading west-north-west, which climbs steeply, leaving the buron on your right. After about 2.5 km, the path joins a wide track: turn right and join the D503 road about a hundred metres further on, at the Croix de la Rode.

(1) Turn right. A long stretch of road follows, 3.5 km in a north-westerly direction. In a wide right-hand bend, just before a descent, a path starts on the left.

Part of theGRP® Tour des Monts d'Aubrac,GR®6, marked in white and red

(2) Turn left (old Roman road), heading west. The path gradually turns southwards before entering the Aubrac National Forest after about 800 m.

(3) About 600 m after entering the forest, join the D219: turn left (southwards) and follow it for about 50 metres, until you reach the start of a path on the right.

(4) Turn right. The track skirts the Roc de Campuels to the north. As numerous tracks converge, you will come to an information board about the Roman road.

(5) Continue along the track heading north-west and, after about 2 km of almost straight walking, you’ll reach a crossroads near the Croix de Vaysse.

(6) Turn left; the path gradually turns south, then reaches the edge of the forest after almost 2 km. It then turns west again, before reaching the road at the entrance to the hamlet of Les Enfrux after a few bends (cross and fork). Take the road on the right heading due north above the hamlet, then the first street on the left which crosses the hamlet (you can also take the road on the left at the cross and join the street crossing the village at a drinking trough).

(7) Continue along the main street through the hamlet and, at the end, turn right. Continue to the road at La Verminière (Maisons).

(8) Turn left; after a few more metres of tarmac road, a very beautiful, shaded path lined with low walls begins, descending gently into the valley. After more than 2 km, the path reaches the D19 at a junction. Take the road opposite which descends towards Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac. After 150 m, at the cemetery, you’ll join theGR®65Way of St James, which comes in from the left.

(9) Continue along the road, cross the Boralde de Saint-Chély via the Pont des Pélerins, and climb up to the village centre to the Place de la Mairie in Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac, then head to the lodge (E), today’s stop

Leaving the Rajas lodge, we took a detour via the Signal du Mailhebiau (the highest point in the Aubrac).
This added just under an hour to the day’s walk, and the 360° view from the summit is superb. The peace and solitude are intense.

A lovely stretch of my tour of the Monts d’Aubrac. A steady climb from Saint-Chely, but it’s shaded so there were no particular difficulties. Crossing the mountain pastures is sometimes quite a sight amidst the herds – you have to be careful not to get too close to the calves!
