Circular route around the Viosne and the Chaussée Jules César

A mountain bike ride of around 25km, passing through fields, woods and pretty villages along the Viosne and Couleuvre rivers (Santeuil, Brignancourt, Le Perchay, Ableiges).
A lovely spot for a break halfway along the route at the Étang de la Vallière for a picnic.
No major difficulties to speak of, apart from a short path through the woods near Santeuil and a return route via the road from Ableiges to Cormeilles (though other options are available).

Description of the route

Start from the centre of Cormeilles-en-Vexin, Place de l'Église (parking available).

(S/E) Head north-west, leaving the church on your left, and take the main road.

(1) After the war memorial, turn left onto Chemin des Grands Prés. Head down to the hamlet of Bazancourt and walk through it.

(2) Turn left onto the D190 towards Ableiges.

(3) At the crossroads, ignore the first track on the right and take the second one heading west between the fields. Continue straight on, ignoring a few side tracks.

(4) At the end of the track, take the road that descends to the left.

(5) At the junction with the D28, continue straight ahead along a path that runs alongside the grounds of Château d'Us (Château de Dampont).

(6) At the end of the path, take the small road on the right. Walk past some beautiful houses and continue along a path.

(7) At a three-way junction, follow the path straight ahead which climbs through the undergrowth. Then descend steeply, turn left and climb back up to reach the plateau. Walk alongside a wood and then descend between fenced-off meadows.

(8) At the junction, ignore the first path on the right and take the second one just behind it (it climbs up alongside the fields).

(9) At the top of the hill, turn left. A lovely descent along the edge of the woods and across the fields.

(10) At the junction with the road, continue along the path opposite, skirting the tennis courts, then admire the view of the villages on the horizon.

(11) At the junction with the D51, take the D159 opposite, which heads down towards Brignancourt.

(12) When the road turns left towards Commeny and Moussy, continue straight on towards the church. Go round the church and take the road leading to Chars, downhill along the edge of the woods.

(13) Halfway between Brignancourt and Chars, turn left and cross the level crossing.

(14) At the Moulin de Noisemont, take the path on the left.

(15) At the junction of the two paths, take the one on the left and you will reach the D159 road.

(16) Follow it to the right as it climbs.

(17) After about 800m on this road, in the dip of a right-hand bend, take the path that appears on the left (barrier).

(18) After 300m, at the fork, take the path leading down to the right towards the Étang de la Vallière. Walk along the pond to its southern end.

(19) Leave the pond via the path leading to the left of the mill. Cross the small hamlet of Vallière.

(20) At the end of the path, turn left onto the D51 for 100m. Turn right onto the path that leads into the woods. Please note, this path overlooks a field and is quite steep for the first few metres (children should walk here)! It is then criss-crossed by several tree roots, so take care for the first 200 metres.

(21) The path then branches off to the right and leads us gently towards Le Perchay. It turns into a village road and leads to the D66.

(22) At the stop sign, take the D66 to the right. At the next junction, take the D51 to the left.

(23) When you reach the agricultural cooperative, follow the Chaussée Jules César to the left. Go straight on, ignoring the side roads, until you reach the D169.

(24) Cross the D169 and continue along the Chaussée Jules César, which winds its way around the woods.

(25) When you reach the junction with another path, turn left. At the next junction, continue straight on along the path that goes downhill.

(26) Once in Ableiges, cross the railway line at the level crossing. At the fork, take the D92 road to the right for 200m.

(27) Take the D190 road which climbs to the left. This road takes you back to Cormeilles-en-Vexin through the fields.

(3) At the Croix de Bazancourt, continue straight on along the D190.

(2) When you pass the sign marking the entrance to Cormeilles-en-Vexin, turn right into the Bazancourt housing estate. Head back towards the village centre via the same route you took on the way there.

(1) Turn right and you will immediately find yourself back at the Place de l'Église (S/E).

Notes

Two alternative routes are possible:
- At (19), you can shorten the route: take the D51 on the left, then take the road on the right towards Us. After 1.5 km on this road, you’ll arrive near some houses. Take the hairpin bend to the left. Cross the level crossing, continue along the road winding between the houses and head back up the path taken on the way out, which runs alongside the Château d'Us. Return to Cormeilles via Frémécourt (follow the path taken on the way out).
- At (22), you can shorten the route: take the D169 down to Us and rejoin the path taken on the way out via the Château d'Us to return to Cormeilles via Frémécourt.

It really is a lovely place for a bike ride. We’d done the local walks on foot before, and it’s ideal for mountain biking. You cover more ground and get to see more of the area.

A lovely route, alternating between quiet roads and beautiful paths or trails.

No difficulty, no major technical climbs. A real family treat

A beautiful, varied route with stunning scenery... perfect for getting out and about after lockdown, away from the crowds
A significant section on the road and a bit too much climbing on mountain bikes for me and my wife

We did this route on foot. It was absolutely brilliant. The scenery was breathtaking. We set off from Santeuil Le Perchay station and made our way to point no. 8 to follow the route. It’s lovely in autumn with all the beautiful colours.
