Discovering Montreuil’s heritage

Montreuil has preserved some traces of its past, including its Romanesque church, the courtyard gate, the Écoué porch, the homes of local dignitaries, wells, and so on. Its landscape of plains and marshes invites you to explore. The town was known as Montreuil-sur-mer until 1945, due to its former location on the edge of the Gulf of Pictons. The former gulf is now occupied by the Marais Poitevin, hence this woodcarving of a heron taking flight, the bird emblematic of wetlands. It is accompanied by the names of the hamlets within the commune: Écoué, Baude, Fraigneau.

Description of the walk

The start of this walk is in the car park by the cemetery at the entrance to the village of Montreuil.

(S/E) Head towards the village centre via Rue du Cèdre. Walk past the former girls’ school, the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption (the doors are open), the courtyard gate, the old houses of local dignitaries and the wells, until you reach a crossroads.
(1) Turn right onto Rue du Colombier and carry on, ignoring the ‘no through road’ sign, until you reach the SNCF guardhouse.

(2) Continue along a private path (access permitted for walkers) until you reach a junction.
(3) Take the grassy path on the left and carry on straight ahead. Halfway along, keep slightly to the left where the old railway track is still visible, and carry on straight ahead until you reach the D68.

(4) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead along the Chemin de Chottard until you reach a small road.

(5) Turn left onto this road, which leads you to the entrance to the village of Baude.

(6) Walk through the village via Rue du Communal and carry on until you reach the sign for Écoué.
(7) Turn left onto Rue du Marais. At the bend, a small grassy path on the left takes you to Rue du Grand Bois. Follow it to the right, then turn right again to join Rue de Chantefoin. Turn right onto it, emerge onto Rue des Roches and follow it to the left. Turn left at the three-way junction to join the D68.

(8) Follow it to the right and continue along the D20a until you reach the original junction.

(1) Continue straight on along Rue du Cèdre to reach the car park (S/E).
