Around Saint-Germain-d'Ectot

A very easy short countryside walk, with varied terrain (dirt, road, grass, rock), enjoyable on a mountain bike, but also suitable on foot or on horseback.

Description of the route

The start/finish point is in front of the town hall.

(S/E) Head towards Caen/Hottot-les-Bagues via the D173 and continue to the hamlet of La Chapelle.

(1) When you see the sign for La Chapelle, turn right and take the gravel track. You should see the D9. Continue straight on along this track towards the hamlet of Ectot.

(2) At the bottom of the descent, turn right and start the climb. Turn left at the first track and follow it.

(3) Cross the D67 (you can go to the pond by heading down this road).

(4) Then, before the hamlet of Candon, turn right and go up the road. Once at the top, turn right and you’ll be back at the town hall (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 145 m - Parking in front of the town hall

Worth a visit

There is a small pond below point (3), which can be reached by heading down the D9 or by taking a small path on the left, ending in a jetty, and following the original route.
Of course, the fields and trees surrounding the paths offer a magnificent landscape.

A short, gentle walk. Lots of flowers (male orchids, etc.). Beautiful scenery.
No difficulty.
The first kilometre is a bit monotonous, following a quiet country road.
At point 3, we went as far as the pond. Not much water but plenty of tadpoles.

The route is flat and short. However, it can be extended south-westwards, past Candon. We follow the stream, cross it and head back up to the village. As for historical points of interest, only the modern church of St Germain d’Ectot is worth noting (warning to those with sensitive ears: it has no soundproofing!).
The full loop of this walk, covering around fifteen kilometres, allows you to explore the barony of Torteval and the castle and its moat at Parfouru l’Eclin.
