Around Berrias-et-Casteljau

A hike to discover the banks of the Chassezac, the villages of Berrias and Casteljau, Ardèche hamlets with, as a bonus, a passage through the Bois de Païolive and a view of the Gorges du Chassezac.

At the start, when you walk along the Chassezac and in the Bois de Païolive, there are many paths. A GPS may be useful.

Description of the walk

Access to the start via the D104. After or before Maisonneuve, depending on your direction of arrival, take the D252. At La Rouveyrolle, take the second road on the right. At the end of this road, turn right, pass in front of the campsite and, at the roundabout, continue straight ahead. The car park entrance will be on the right. Please note that this car park is very busy during the summer.

(S/E) Head to the back of the car park and take the opportunity to admire the Chassezac. Take the path on the right, which runs alongside the river. It will soon join the Chemin du Redon, which you should take on the left until it turns sharply to the right.

(1) Opposite, follow the path that runs alongside the Chassezac. At a junction of three paths, take the one opposite and follow it. This path forms a circular loop. When it turns left to retrace its steps, take a path on the right and join the D252 (Route du bois de Païolive). Take this road on the left and cross the Granzon.

(2) At the bend in the road, take a path on the right, which quickly leads to an intersection where you continue to the right on the GR®4. Continue to Chemin de Granzon.

(3) Turn right, cross the stream of the same name and continue for about 100 metres. Turn left onto the Berre path (still on the GR®4). Please note that after heavy rain, the path becomes impassable for several hundred metres, so take the field running alongside the path. Follow this path and enter Berrias via Rue de l'Église. Turn right at the first street and then left at the first street.

(4) Before following the GR®4 along Rue de la Fontaine de Berre, you can continue for a few metres to take a look at the church in Berrias. Follow the street to the right along a small stream and, at the first intersection, take the path leading off to the left, leaving the GR®4 for the time being. At the next intersection, take the path also leading off to the left.

(5) Pass close to the Fontaine de Berre and continue along the path to Chemin des Blanchadures, which you should take to the right. Continue straight ahead, passing three paths leading off to the left, until you reach an intersection.

(6) Turn onto the path on the right. The landscape changes and you arrive in the Bois de Païolive. Follow the path until you reach a crossroads with four paths.

(7) Turn onto the second trail on the left, where you will find the GR®4. Continue on the GR®4 until you reach the Route du Bois de Païolive, D252.

(8) First turn right then left to carefully cross this departmental road and take a downhill path (GR®4). At the first intersection, continue straight ahead and leave the GR®4, which branches off to the left. Gradually, the view opens up onto the Gorges du Chassezac. Continue along this path until you reach a road.

(9) Follow it to the right. You are now at Mazet Plage. Continue along this road, join the Route du Bois de Païolive and pass in front of the reservoir.

(10) Turn left and join the Chemin de Toul. Take it to the left and climb up to the junction with La Rue du Serrou.

(11) Follow it to the left and cross the hamlet of Toul. Continue to the end and take the path opposite to the first crossroads.

(12) Turn right, pass two paths on your left and continue until you reach a road (Lou Serret Ouest).

(13) Take this road to the left, continue until you reach the next road (Chemin Terre du Moulin), take it to the right and immediately take a path on the left that joins a road (Chemin du Redon).

(14) Take this road to the right, then immediately left and enter a paved slanting street. At the end of this street, turn right onto Chemin du Redon until you reach a sharp bend to the left.

(15) Leave the road and take a small path on the right. At the end of this path, turn left until you rejoin Chemin du Redon. Then turn left, then right, and after a few dozen metres you will arrive at the car park (S/E).
