Along River Seven and up Sandhurst Hill

This nice little pub walk goes along River Serven before going up to Sandhurst Hill and trig point. Along the way you will be able to enjoy many views of the countryside and if you are lucky you can even spot some rabbits, squirrels, birds and other little surprises if you keep your eyes wide open.

Description of the walk

Start & Parking: The Red Lion Pub, Wainlode Hill (GL2 9LW) Grid ref. SO 848 258

(S/E) With your back to the Red and Lion Riverside Caravan Park, turn left along the road past the Red Lion Pub.

(1) Just past the pub, find a footpath kind of straight up the hill through a gate located between the road and the river into the field. Keep following the path round to the right, uphill which enters trees and reaches a gate. Go through the gate to exit into another field. Carry on uphill handrailing the hedge right. On the way, enjoy the view of the countryside right opposite the bench.

(2) Go through the kissing gate as you enter the woods. The path here goes left uphill. Be careful as you find a Y junction a few meters ahead where you turn right towards another kissing gate. Walk through it to re-enter the woods. In this portion, you can enjoy bluebells. On the way, carefully cross the wooden bridge and keep straight ahead as you go out of the woods into an open area to re-inter the woods a little further on. The path goes downhill towards the riverside.

(3) Reach a wooden stile with a "Seven Way Path" signpost. Cross it to enter the field. Keep right, handrailing the hedge and riverside right. From here you are going to walk across several fields as you walk alongside River Severn and enjoy views of the river until you reach a wooden table left past a pylon. Along the way, you will cross a little stream, a double wooden stile, and a kissing gate.

(4) Just past the pylon, find a kissing gate on your left at the tip of the woods. You can't miss it. There is a little welcoming pond and table on its right. Ideal for a snack. Walk through the kissing gate with the "Restricted Byway" signpost and walk away from the river. You are now walking on a farm track with the pond on your right-hand side. Keep following the wide path uphill "Rodway Lane" and on the way enjoy views of the countryside.

(5) Walk around a gate and toward the farm. At the T junction just past Brawn Farm House on your right, take left toward the "Restricted Byway" to enter "Brawn Farm". Walk through the gate a little further ahead as you enjoy a view of the countryside on your right. Then find an information board explaining what you can find at Brown Farm.

(6) Walk between two ponds and as you reach the farm buildings keep right. You now walk between two open fields. Enjoy the views on the left and right.

(7) At the path junction keep straight uphill following the Blue Public Bridleway waymarker. The way up is rewarded by a stunning view on the left all the way up. As you reach the top of the hill a great table with chairs will welcome you! As you go, ignore the path right to walk past the trig point and bench.

(8) Then at the Y junction keep left still following the Blue waymarker. From here, aim for the building hidden into the woods. Walk straight ahead past it on your left to enter the woods and reach a path junction. Keep straight.

(9) Walk out of the woods into the field and handrail the hedge left as you go downhill. As you go, enjoy the view straight ahead. Walk all the way down the field to reach a kissing gate which you cross. Then walk down in between the field and woods until you reach the junction and kissing gate encountered at the start. You have the river down in front of you.

(2) Cross the gate and walk back to the start for a well-deserved drink at the Red Lion pub.(S/E)
