A circuit from Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance

This hike, mostly in tree-shade, takes you through coombs and valleys to the south of Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance. Beautiful paths, some of them forgotten or seldom used, add a pleasant touch of wilderness. A breath of fresh air in absolute calm, in an unspoilt natural setting, not forgetting the two menhir statues at Pousthomy, which add a touch of historical interest to this walk.

Description of the walk

Start: At Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, leave the D999 and follow the signs for "Base de Loisirs" to the right or left, depending on which direction you come from. The small asphalt road leads to the partially shaded car park near the swimming pool.

(S/E) Leaving the car park, pass the swimming pool below on your left, then cross the snack-bar terrace. Go through the gate in the stone wall, then down to the left and take the footbridge over the Rance. Fork left to cross another car park, then continue on the uphill road around the campsite reception area, joining the D33. Follow this road to the left with caution until it meets another road to the right, where a sign points to Le Bouyssou. Cross the road to reach the sign.

Yellow PR® markings

(1) Take the path which starts on the left and climbs steadily through the beautiful shade of beech, chestnut and oak trees. Go through a first wooden gate, then a second, and reach a fork in the road.

(2) Continue straight on, ignoring an uphill path on the right. Go through a third gate in poor condition, then leave the wood to walk in the open between two beautiful hedgerows. Arrive at a tarmac road by a cross with the Pousthomy church bell tower in view.

(3) Turn left. Stop to admire the menhir statue on the left and join the D33 opposite a beautifully restored old house.

No markings

Turn right through the village and, at the last houses, take the left-hand side of the road with caution to the old windmill, which has unfortunately lost its sails. Cross the road to see the second menhir statue, some 20 m from the windmill, then continue to the nearby fork in the road after passing a picnic table and a waste bin. Follow the road to the right for a few metres.

(4) Turn sharp right onto a path that is seldom used, judging by the brambles and nettles that obstruct it in places. Continue gently downhill to the asphalt access road to La Rivière. Turn left.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right and follow the road uphill through beautiful woods until it makes a hairpin left turn.

(6) Turn right onto a wide double-track road. When you come to an old barn with a beautiful frame, turn left alongside it, ignoring a track going off to the right. At the intersection 600 m further on, go straight ahead until you reach the hairpin bend of the road to Montégut le Bas.

(7) Go straight down this road, reaching a junction where it bends sharply to the right. Stay on this road until you reach the next left-hand hairpin bend.

(8) Take the wide track on the right which enters the woods. Turn left and join a wider track which passes just above Les Bordes, then forks right to pass some buildings at Mauques, before becoming a tarmac road.

(9) Turn left and continue to the left-hand hairpin bend.

(10) Take the grassy path that starts right at this bend. You will come to a large meadow with a ruin on your right. Follow the wide track and bear right towards a wooden electricity pole and a field hut below. When the track becomes lost, veer slightly to the right, taking care to pass above the hut while aiming for the line of trees beyond.

(11) Find the short, steep, narrow passage leading to a field below, and follow the edge of the field around a wide bend to the left, eventually finding a gap to the right. Pass through this gap and quickly reach a crossroads where a large tree with a half-burnt trunk serves as a landmark.

(12) Turn left and follow this shady path until you see the Boriette Basse dwellings. Negotiate a right-hand bend, pass between the buildings and return to the tarmac. Follow the small road straight ahead.

Yellow PR® markings

(13) A few metres before a yellow marker on a metal lamp-post to the left of the road, leave the road and turn right onto a narrow path which leads straight down to the D33 bridge over the Rance. Follow the road to the right with great caution, keeping to the left-hand side of the road. Then take the first road on the left, signposted "Base de Loisirs". Cross the footbridge back to the car park (S/E).
