A balcony overlooking the Bay of Saint-Malo - La Cité d'Alet

The Cité d'Alet is a family-friendly walk, with an exceptional promontory, offering 270° panorama of the Cité Corsaire, the fortified rocks of La Conchée, Petit Bé, Île Harbour, Grand Bé (Chateaubriand's burial place), the Rance estuary and its dam, and Dinard and its beaches.
It's also Saint-Malo birthplace, with the remains of the first human settlements.

Description of the walk

Start: Park in the Sablons marina car park. In high season, it may be necessary to park in pay and display spots.

(S/E) From the harbour, head for the small shopping center and, at the sign for the bar: Les Filles d'Alet, take the ramp to the side of the bar leading to La Corniche d'Alet.

(1) On the right-hand side of the corniche, note the remains of the Roman wall.
The corniche runs around the fortifications built by Vauban, and heavily reinforced by the Germans in 1942. Along the way, three machine-gun turrets remain.

(2) ''The stairs on the right lead to the glacis of the fortifications.
The cornice leads to the Allée du Marégraphe. Turn right and continue along Chemin de la Corderie to Place Saint-Pierre. See the excavations and remains on the left.
Pass the 14th-century Tour Solidor (tower), from which navigation on the Rance was controlled.
At the end of Plage Solidor, reach the administrative buildings and cross them to reach the hangar at the far end.

(3) The hangar houses the Ar Zenith boat, declared a historical monument. Go around to the left, and take the stairs to the path behind. It enters the Parc des Corbières.
Walk around the park along the path overlooking the Corbières beach, and exit the park via the main driveway at the Eglise Sainte-Croix (church) (do not cross the park's perimeter wall).
Walk past the columned gate and, after 100 m, "observe the Malouinière du Valmarin (hotel)". Retrace your steps and turn right into Rue du Pré Brécel.

At the crossroads, take the small stairs opposite which leads to Plage des Bas Sablons (beach). Turn left, walk past the Tour Blanche (lighthouse) and arrive at the car park (S/E).

In the nearby area

The Corniche is maintained by Les Amis des Chemins de Ronde.
The Alet site was the main defense post of the Atlantic Wall built by the occupying forces. The commemorative museum is open to visitors from April 1. Since this year (2022), the Firing Director's Post has been restored thanks to the Fondation du Patrimoine.
Traces of human occupation can be found on Place Saint-Pierre, where excavations have revealed Gallo-Roman remains dating from the 4th to the end of the 8th century, but also from the Carolingian period (early 9th to 10th century) and, above all, the first cathedral, which radiated from the 10th to the mid-13th century. It was abandoned by the episcopate of the time, with the bishop moving to the Rocher de Saint-Malo.
On June 18, the boat Ar Zenith and its crew joined General de Gaulle in England, when it was assigned to the Audierne-Île de Sein route.
