Trail along the east coast of Marie-Galante via Pointe de Tali

Follow this path to explore the rugged east coast, passing by Anse Feuillard, a small cove where you can go for a swim… Then discover the site of the old indigo processing plants. Description of the walk

Starting point: Barreau, in the commune of Capesterre on Marie Galante. There is space for two or three cars to park in front of the sign marking the start of the trail.

(S/E) Leave the track (Chemin des Galets) and turn right (north-east) onto the narrow path that descends towards the sea through the raisiniers. At a Fork in the road, turn left, leaving Morne Varice on your right.

(1) Head down to the right to Anse Feuillard, a small cove where you can go for a swim. Retrace your steps.

(1) Continue northwards along the coastline. The walk is over rocky terrain, so it’s best to wear sturdy footwear as it can quickly become slippery in wet weather.

(2) Halfway along the route, note the ruins of old indigo mills on the right and, if you look carefully, a few indigo bushes. Continue along the coast; the coastline remains very rugged. Note the Morne Constant wind farm on the left. On reaching Anse Piton, climb up the hill via a steep path.

(3) At the junction with the Sentier des Falaises, turn left heading due south. Continue climbing, skirting Morne Piton (Morne Parsonne on the map) to the left. Turn right and head for the hamlet of Saint-Aurens.

(4) Turn left and walk along the D201. Pass through the hamlet of Desruisseaux, which still has a beautiful mill with three coconut palms.

(5) At the entrance to Jacquelot, turn left towards Gros Morne. Head back down through the Rosy ravine.

(6) Join the Chemin des Galets and follow it to the right. Note the sugarcane fields, the mango trees and a few Creole gardens, then the second wind farm at Petite Place, which is unique in that its turbines can be lowered in the event of a cyclone warning. Return to the starting point at a place called Barreau (S/E).

Make sure you’re wearing sturdy footwear as the rocks are slippery. A rain poncho is essential! Sun cream and mosquito repellent.
Take water with you.

Worth a visit

Pick some indigo leaves. The indigo bush, dyer’s indigo or Indian indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), is a shrub native to warm regions belonging to the Fabaceae family, whose leaves are used to produce indigo dye.

A lovely walk on Marie-Galante, such a peaceful island. It was a bit of a challenge due to the fairly steep climb and the heat, but we made it! Part of the walk is along a small road, but there weren’t many cars, so we took the opportunity to admire the trees and gardens. Make sure you’re wearing sturdy footwear as there are stones and roots on some sections. I’d recommend it.

A magnificent walk along the east coast of the ‘Galette’… it felt as though we were in Ireland or Scotland as we walked along the cliffs
We were absolutely delighted
