Aldermaston Wharf to Theale, around Reading

Start : Aldermaston Railway Station (RG7 5QE) Grid ref. SU 601 672

(D) From the station car park turn left at the road.

(1) Turn right at the main road and cross to the canal towpath before the swing-bridge. Continue along the canal towpath East to Padworth lock where there is an original milestone (A).

(2) The canal passes close to the railway here and the Great Western trains still use this route from London to
the west country.

(3) Cross Ufton swing bridge to reach the towpath on the other side (B).

(4) Continue along the towpath through the water meadows past Tyle Mill lock.

(5) Cross the road at the swing bridge and continue to Sulham stead swing-bridge where a footpath leads to the weir.

(6) On reaching the road at Theale swing bridge cross the canal bridge with care and turn left up the road to Theale Railway Station. (A)

(A)The gravel workings in the neighbourhood are already attracting wildlife. Old gravel pits are often an ideal habitat.

(B)The pillbox positioned at the confluence of the River Kennet and the canal is a relic of the Second World War.
