Description of the walk

(S/E) Starting from the car park at the “La Coupe aux Fourgs” cross-country ski centre. Take the Vourbey trail (blue), heading towards the downhill ski resort. Walk past the nursery school and begin the climb up to Mont Vourbey.

(1) Pass by the Chapelle de l’Espérance, which offers a lovely view of the village of Les Fourgs… it’s well worth a short detour. Continue the climb along theGR®.

(2) Cross the tree line, then head left across the snow-covered fields or pastures, following a hedge. This will keep you on the contour line until you rejoin theGR® further down.

(3) From there, rejoin the Vourbey track until you reach the junction with the Sapin Président track, and take the link path towards L’Herba, heading up towards it via the track or road depending on the season.

(4) Once you’ve emerged from the forest at the “Bonjour” chalet, leave the track and head due east towards the “Granges Derniers”. Then descend into the valley to the cistern on the path which, if you follow it, will take you along the French-Swiss border.

(5) Follow the path alongside the border to reach “La Bégaude”, then descend gently to cross the peat bog if it is covered in snow; otherwise, go round it on either side. Head towards “La Beuffarde”.

(6) You’ll come back to the road. Stay close to the forest and enter it at a right angle; you’ll find a fairly wide path through the woods – sometimes this track is groomed in winter – which takes you to the end of the floodlit “La Coupe” track. Make your way back to the car park where you left your vehicle via the tracks. (S/E)

A lovely walk through the mountain pastures with friendly farmers and, above all, stunning scenery and fantastic views of the Alps – moderate difficulty

Thank you for your feedback; the line has indeed been removed, so I have just deleted the reference to that electricity pylon.
Kind regards

Hello,
With a view to improving the information provided for this walk, I’d like to clarify two points.
At point 2, please ignore the pylon as mentioned in the description, as the high-voltage line no longer exists!
(It still appears on the IGN map)
At point 4, ‘Granges Bonjour’, I chose to head up to the Chalet de L’Herba and then on to the viewpoint at the summit of L’Herba!
The detour is well worth the effort.
It’s also worth noting that I did this walk in May, so you might meet a farming couple making cheese at the chalet (the chalet is closed in winter) and then have a picnic on the rocks, which serve as a dining area at the 360° viewpoint.

It was a lovely walk thanks to the sunshine; I just used the GPX track (which is good quality as I didn’t go wrong once) on my smartphone with the OruxMaps app. I thought it was a shame not to go via the highest point of Mont de l’Herba at 1,303 metres. So, from the Mont de l’Herba chalet, I followed the tarmac road towards Les Hôpitaux Vieux and, after about 1 km, having found no path, I turned off to the right and ended up off-track, guided by my GPS. The viewpoint is lovely, but I had to climb over fences with no openings. I couldn’t find a path back to the road leading to the Mont de l’Herba chalet either, even though the viewpoint is marked on my IGN map.
Kind regards

I realise that this route might not be easy to follow if there’s no snow… as the fences are likely still up. In winter it’s different: the fences are lowered, allowing you to pass freely, and the cross-country ski trails help you find your way.
Kind regards

Quite a struggle… the hike’s route is rather haphazard and difficult to follow… otherwise, it’s a lovely, pleasant spot – a shame we wasted time trying to find our way.
