Levada de Moinho and Levada Noda at Ponto do Sol

This is an alternative route to the best-known trails, but it still offers some fine panoramic views and includes sections with waterfalls and tunnels, while avoiding overcrowding. A headlamp is highly recommended for the tunnel.

Description of the walk

The walk starts just behind the Igreja da Lombada church in Ponta do Sol, also known as Espirito Santo on some maps. A few parking spaces are available close to the church, otherwise you'll need to park in a nearby street, or along the road as the locals do, taking care not to obstruct traffic.

(S/E) The Levada do Moinho can be reached via a small path with a few steps immediately behind the church. It winds its way through the village without difficulty, passing through a variety of landscapes, sometimes shaded by trees, sometimes more exposed. Reach a stream.

(1) Climb over it by crossing a few stone steps. Just before crossing the stream, there is a picnic table carved into the rock, where you can take a break and enjoy the view of the stream. Continue northwards until you reach a staircase on the right.

(2) Take this and you will reach the Levada Nova. Follow this to the right. After a bend to the left, you come to a gallery cut into the rock, past which flow several waterfalls.

(3) Cross these galleries and quickly reach the entrance to a tunnel.

(4) Enter the tunnel, which is wide enough to pass through without too much difficulty. After 200 m, the exit appears.

(5) On leaving the tunnel, the Levada Nova is a few dozen metres higher than the one you followed on the outward journey. The route is more exposed and airy, offering superb unobstructed views of the sea and the Ribeiro da Ponta do Sol, which winds along the bottom of the valley.
There aren't many handrails on this stretch, which is fairly close to the drop, so you need to be careful, but it's not complicated. The levada quickly climbs back up towards the houses and reaches a crossroads.

(6) The levada continues straight on, but at this point you need to leave it by taking a short path off to the right and joining a small street that leads straight down to the parking area (S/E).

Notes

The walk does not present any particular difficulties, although the second section along the Levada Nova can be a little vertiginous and is not always protected by a handrail.

A torch or headlamp is highly recommended for crossing the tunnel halfway along the route.

As usual in Madeira, the weather can change very quickly. It's best to bring rain gear, especially as you'll be crossing waterfalls on a regular basis.

The gradient indicated is far too high in relation to reality, due to Madeira's very steep terrain, which interferes with the GPS route. It's more like a hundred metres.

A beautiful hike along two levadas. We extended the hike at the end of the loop by continuing on our way instead of going back up the stairs. The path continues. We crossed the river and arrived at a waterfall. Continuing along the path, we crossed the river again and went up the path that passes above the waterfall to rejoin the circuit.
We left at 9:00 a.m. and did not encounter many people.
The mouth of the river is not difficult.
I think the elevation gain is about 200 metres. It is safe, except for a few places where you have to be careful, but it is easy to navigate.
I recommend it!

We did it in 3 hours, no difficulty.
The 1st part is average in terms of viewpoints, as most of the people we met only did the Levada Noda on the outward and return legs.

Beautiful Levadas to do in a loop. We left via the Levada de Moinho, in the shade in the morning.
Be careful on the way back via the Levada Nova, towards the tunnel exit, keep your head down or you'll go boom! (My 1.71 m will remember...)

A very nice hike that we did in the opposite direction, with beautiful views and waterfalls.
Along the Levada Nova, some of the passages on the edge of the void are not safe or the railings are broken.
At the end, some guides suggest continuing to the source of the Levada Nova. But we couldn't find a way across the torrent.
