Description of the walk

Start from the car park, Place de la Mairie.

(S/E) Turn left onto Rue de la Mairie, follow it and you’ll reach the crossroads near the Post Office.

(1) Turn right onto Rue du Marché (D238) and walk for about 300 m to the hamlet of Valette.

(2) Leave the road and take the track on the right leading down towards Château de Bessin. You’ll come to a T-junction with a new road.

(3) Turn right onto the road and follow it until the next left.

(4) Turn left, go round the château, pass an old mill and reach a sharp left-hand bend.

(5) At the signpost, leave the road and turn right towards Lamastre - Col de Saint-Genest. A little further on, rejoin the road and follow it to the right as far as Le Barral.

(6) At the Le Barral sign, follow the path to the right towards Les Croisières/le Crestet. Head towards Les Giraudons.

(7) At the Les Giraudons sign, follow the grassy path to the left towards Le Clot. You’ll come out onto a road (D269); follow it to the left for about a hundred metres, then turn right towards Le Clot. You’ll reach the hamlet.

(8) Continue straight on, then turn sharply right to follow the track to a multi-way junction (elevation 691).

(9) Head left for thirty metres, then veer right and head towards Les Bessias (elevation 716).

(10) Turn left, continuing to follow the signs for the Col de Saint-Genest until you reach La Grangette.

(11) Continue to the right until the next four-way junction at Les Horts. Turn right and head for the next junction.

(12) Turn left and head for the multi-way junction at Col de Saint-Genest.

(13) Head straight on towards the hamlet of La Grande Côte. Ignore the turn-offs to the left and head for the La Blachette junction.

(14) Turn sharply right. At the next junction, turn left and continue to the hamlet of La Grande Côte.

(15) Go straight on, then turn left before reaching La Petite Côte. Walk down to the stream, cross it, then turn right to follow it along the right bank. Walk back down towards Gilhoc to the junction you passed on the way out.

(3) Turn right, and follow the route back in the opposite direction to reach the village centre and the town hall car park (S/E).

Notes

Take the D269 from Lamastre to reach the start of this hike.
There is a large car park next to the town hall in Gilhoc-sur-Ormèze, or 50 metres further down at the cemetery. The entire walk is marked with white and yellow signs.

Worth a visit

Admire the castles. There is also the Sainte-Marguerite Spring in Gilhoc-sur-Ormèze.
A visit to Saint-Étienne Church is well worth a detour.

you can only see the castles from a distance; there’s quite a bit of tarmac

Unfortunately, we had to cut our hike short because, whilst we managed to cross the first stream by wading through it with our feet well submerged, the crossing towards Barral and Giraudons proved more perilous, as the stream had turned into a small torrent; so we gave up and finished the route by road. But as soon as this spell of heavy rain is over and the streams have calmed down, we’ll definitely reschedule it.

A lovely spring walk with a detour south around the Serre de La Veyrie before returning to La Grande Côte.
The numerous tarmac routes are no problem as there is no traffic and they are essentially just wide paths with a smooth surface.
Before point 7 at Les Giraudons, the path disappears into the grass before the houses, and before the stream, the yellow/white markings veer left before crossing the stream. It seems to me that the route now veers sharply left to avoid passing through this hamlet. Below this hamlet there is a tip full of non-biodegradable waste – WHAT A SHAME!! Poor nature

A lovely discovery on a sunny day. It’s best done when the vegetation is sparse, so you can enjoy the beautiful views to the east and west. A lovely day.

A very pleasant walk. There is a bit of tarmac, mind you, but on roads with very little traffic. Beautiful views of the Vercors on a clear day, and of the Ardèche too. I hesitated a little at point 7 trying to find the path, but with the GPS tracks there were no major difficulties.

A very pleasant walk despite the intense heat; one to do again in the autumn to enjoy the scenery, which is less obscured by the vegetation. Thanks to the author of this lovely walk
