Kinderdijk

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kinderdijk is not only worth a detour but definitely worth the trip! Most likely during the off-season to avoid (also) the tourists brought there by busloads from Rotterdam, The Hague or Amsterdam.
The view of the windmills, most of which date from 1740, and the surrounding nature is absolutely magnificent and varies depending on the light... the play of clouds and sun provides a wide variety of contrasts throughout the day, sometimes giving the impression of early evening in the morning.

Description of the walk

The proposed route starts from the (small) car park (expensive) at the visitor centre (information, museum tickets, guided tours and boat trips). There is a large free car park about 400 metres west of the starting point and another much smaller one, which appears to be free and was completely empty on the Sunday we visited, shortly after km 3.1 near 'Volkstuinvereniging Alblasserdam'.
NB:
- It is not necessary to purchase any tickets if you are not interested in the museums... the route is entirely on public paths.
- For those who wish to extend their walk: 7 kilometres of pure nature in the 'Donkse Laagten' beyond kilometre 9.
