Notes

  • Public fountains: Rome is famous for its many fontanelle (drinking fountains). You will easily find them around the Spanish Steps, in Piazza del Popolo and near the Trevi Fountain. Feel free to fill up your water bottle, the water is drinkable and cool!
  • Monumental fountains: although they are magnificent (Trevi, Barcaccia, Popolo, etc.), the water is not intended for consumption. Instead, look for small fountains with taps (often called nasoni).
  • Shaded areas: some squares, notably Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo, have benches and shaded areas where you can rest away from the sun. Church entrances are also a good option for a short break in the cool.
  • Cafés and trattorias: the route passes through shopping streets where you will easily find cafés, ice cream parlours and small restaurants for a gourmet break or a toilet stop.
  • Comfortable shoes: the route is entirely on cobblestones and city pavements. Wear trainers or light walking shoes to avoid fatigue and blisters.
  • Safety: the central area is very busy and safe, but keep an eye on your personal belongings, especially around popular tourist sites.
