Heath scrubland and cliffs of La Clape

This unique hike offers beautiful views through the heaths and at the foot of the La Clape cliffs in good weather. However, it does present a number of challenges: stony paths, rocky trails that sometimes tend to close in, two ditches to cross, a stone wall to climb at one point, then descend with caution, before returning to more pleasant paths and tracks at the end of the route. Finally, this is an unmarked route for which the use of the Visorando app or a GPS is recommended.

Description of the walk

Departure from Avenue des Jujubiers in Narbonne Plage: parking available in designated spaces near the roundabout.

(S/E) Return to the roundabout, go straight ahead, then take a stony path on the left.

(1) Turn right at the first intersection; the return route is via the path on the left. Pass between the vineyards and continue for about 100 metres.

(2) Turn left onto a path, which becomes a trail and climbs through heath before widening: beautiful views. After turning right, climb up the Garrigue des Karantes and reach a crossroads .

(3) Head left to continue the climb, enjoying more beautiful views. You will reach another crossroads.

(4) Turn right onto a stony path that runs along the cliff on the right-hand side, then descends to the right and crosses a pretty little wood before reaching more vineyards.

(5) Take the path on the left, running alongside a vineyard, before crossing a ditch to climb a path that is not immediately apparent. Begin a short but slightly steep climb, then continue on the left, along the edge of a pine forest. You will come out onto a track facing a vineyard.

(6) Cross the ditch and continue the route on the left, on a dirt track bordering a vineyard on the right. Continue on the left-hand track, after a small stone bridge, for about 300 metres. Then take the path that leads off to the left and climbs uphill. It tends to close in due to the presence of small kermes oak trees.

(7) At the end of the path, at elevation 97, you will see a renovated sheepfold on the right. Continue along another little-used path. Stay alert until you reach a track. Follow it to the left for about 30 metres.

(8) Carefully climb over and descend a white stone wall, then walk along its right-hand side, following a dirt track that crosses a short wooded area before leading to a track towards the Vires wine estate.

(9) Cross this property, then leave it by taking a new track on the left, heading south. Pass between the vineyards and walk about 30 metres after the last small plot.

(10) A sign at this point indicates an aqueduct on the right. Make a short detour, then rejoin the route on the right. Continue along the track, downhill and at the foot of the cliffs. You will reach a fork with a path about 50 metres before the D168.

(11) Turn left onto this path, which runs parallel to the road. Then descend to the left onto a path that runs alongside a vineyard on the right-hand side and joins a track.

(12) Follow this track to the left for about 100 metres, then leave it and take a path on the right that leads back to the first intersection at the start of the hike.

(1) Continue straight ahead, via the stony path you have already travelled, in the opposite direction, and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Parking is available outside the summer season after the roundabout located at 67 Avenue des Jujubiers.

This hike is not recommended after heavy and prolonged rainfall or on days when wild boar hunting is taking place. It is more suited to experienced and somewhat "adventurous" hikers who are not afraid to take paths where pruning shears will be useful in some places. Walking sticks are recommended due to the rocky terrain.

As the route is not marked, the use of the Visorando app or a hiking GPS is strongly recommended. Please note that it also includes passages along the boundaries of private properties marked by signs bearing the words "chasses réservées" (hunting reserved).

It is possible to shorten the route between points (4) and (8): however, this should be checked beforehand.

A beautiful route through the heath. It is essential to follow the route using the app as there are no signposts. Wear long trousers to avoid scratches from the vegetation, which can be very dense in places.

Yesterday, 07/02/2026, I redid starting from Narbonne Plage (car park near No. 67 Avenue des Jujubiers), but shortened it a little by turning right a few metres before waypoint 5, taking the track that passes under the cliffs and heads towards Fontenille (source), then the "ruined farm La Pierre" and the "Château des Karantes".
This is a much easier variation of the hike, but it is not marked, so...
As stated in the comments and description, the use of the Visorando app is highly recommended to follow the route.
