Description of the walk

The walk starts at the docks, with the Nemo museum a little further on.

(S/E) Head towards the city along the riverbanks. Follow the Oosterdock, which then branches off to the right and leads to Prins Hendrikkade. Follow Prins Hendrikkade, which turns left at the Basilica of St. Nicholas. Continue until you reach Damrak. Walk down the street.

(1) Head towards the centre and enjoy the famous Gingerbread Houses with their narrow facades, decorated gables and slightly sloping silhouettes. Continue straight ahead.

(2) Arrive at Dam Square. Take the time to stroll around and discover the national monument. You may wish to stop at the famous Madame Tussauds. Continue on your way and cross the intersection, keeping to Dam Street on your right. Immediately on your left, take Rokin Street. Follow it to the intersection and take Spaarpotsteeg on your right. You will come out on Kalverstraat, where you should turn left.

(3) Follow Kalverstraat, a shopping street. Enjoy the lively atmosphere and recharge your batteries. Follow the street until you reach Begijnensteeg on the right. Turn right onto this street. Continue to the Heilig Hartbeeld in the heart of Begijnhof.

(4) Enjoy the peace and quiet before heading back the way you came. Turn left and walk past Gedempte Begijnensloot. Continue straight ahead, leaving the Amsterdam Gallery behind you, and walk up Sint Luciensteeg. Then turn right, then left onto Nieuwezijds Voorburwal to reach Waterspeelplaats Het Blad park.

Cross the park and turn right onto Nieuwezijds Voorburwal. Continue until you reach Wijdesteeg on the left. Continue along this street, then turn right onto Spuistraat. At the next intersection, turn left onto Paleisstraat, then right onto Singel.

(5) The Singel canal is the first of the concentric belt. Observe the narrow banks and slender façades. Then turn back, cross Paleisstraat to reach the other bank of the Singel, take the street on the left and continue to the second intersection. Turn right onto Oude Spiegelstraat and continue until you cross Herengracht, then turn right onto the street of the same name.

(6) Enjoy the view of the old merchants' canal with its imposing houses. Continue along the street and, at the next intersection, turn left onto Hartenstraat and continue.

(7) You will come out onto Keizergracht. This canal is wider and quieter. A few barges add to the scenery. Cross the canal to reach Reestraat. Keep going in the same direction and cross Prinsengracht before turning left onto the street of the same name. Continue on to enjoy the cafés and small creative shops.

(8) Then turn around and walk back up Prinsengracht.

(9) The silhouette of the Westerkerk dominates the canal and serves as a visual landmark. The façade of the Anne Frank House recalls an essential chapter in history. This stop adds depth and emotion to the tour. Continue along Prinsengracht and cross the canal again via Leliesluis. Then take the street on the right to reach Leliegracht before turning left onto Keizersgracht. Continue in this direction until you reach Brouwersgracht. At this point, turn left onto Brouwersgracht and continue until you can cross the canal via Papiermolensluis. Continue along Korte Prinsengracht, then turn left onto Haarlemmerdijk.

(10) Enjoy this lively street, which gives you a taste of local life. Cafés, designer boutiques and small grocery stores punctuate the walk. Then , turn back and take the same route in reverse, crossing the Korte Prinsengracht canal to reach Haarlemmerstraat. Continue straight ahead, following the street as it curves slightly to the left, then to the right, before reaching the Singel. Cross the canal.

(11) Brouwersgracht offers one of the most beautiful views of Amsterdam: old bridges, flower-filled barges, XXL facades. To reach your destination, take Prins Hendrikkade and continue straight ahead to cross the Open Havenfront.

(12) Pass Amsterdam Centraal station and follow the quay along Stationsplein. Continue straight ahead and pass Central Station. At the end of the quay, cross the Oostertoegang and cross Odebrug street to follow Oosterdokskade.

(13) Oosterdokskade widens. If you have time, you can enjoy a boat tour. Then continue along the docks. The street curves: take Mr JJ van Der Veldebrug, which will take you directly to the Nemo science museum. Follow Oosterdok on the right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The most easily accessible water fountains and toilets are located at Amsterdam Centraal, where you can fill up a bottle and take a comfortable break before or after your walk. Along the way, Magna Plaza near Dam Square or the cafés in the Jordaan offer convenient shelter in case of rain, which is common in the city.

Wear comfortable shoes: the cobblestones and canal banks require steady footing. A windbreaker or waterproof jacket is always useful in Amsterdam, where the weather can change quickly. As this is an urban walk, a small, lightweight bag is more than enough.

Pay special attention to bicycle traffic: there are many cycle paths, sometimes very close to the pavements, and bicycles travel fast. Stay on the pedestrian areas, especially near bridges. In tourist areas such as Dam Square or Centraal, keep your belongings close to you and respect the peace and quiet of the Begijnhof, which is still a residential area.

In case of prolonged rain, you can shorten the circular by returning to the centre via Spuistraat or take shelter in a shopping arcade. To fully enjoy the atmosphere, go in the morning or late afternoon: the light highlights the canals and makes the walk even more pleasant.

Worth a visit

Throughout this walk, Amsterdam's must-see sights reveal themselves naturally: the leaning houses of Damrak, the vast Dam Square surrounded by the Royal Palace, historic canals such as Singel, Herengracht and Prinsengracht, and photogenic bridges that punctuate each change of perspective.

The Begijnhof offers a peaceful interlude in the heart of the city, while the Westerkerk and the façade of the Anne Frank House remind us of the importance of heritage and memory.

To deepen your discovery and better understand the history of these places, guided tours in French are offered by Bonjour Évasion: an ideal way to enrich this walk by exploring anecdotes, hidden neighbourhoods and architectural treasures.
